Woman injured by SUV in mall dining area dies
A woman who was injured when an outofcontrol SUV plowed into an outdoor dining area in a San Jose mall parking lot has died from her injuries, San Jose police said Tuesday morning.
The woman, whose name has not been released, was among eight people injured, two critically, Sunday afternoon when a 69yearold man lost control of his 2000 Toyota 4Runner in front of the Grand Century Mall plaza at Story Road and McLaughlin Avenue at about
noon, officials said.
She died in a San Jose hospital Monday night, police said. Although she was pronounced dead, she remains on a ventilator, according to an official with the coroner’s office.
The man, whose name has not been released, lost control of his vehicle while attempting to park, police said, and struck three women and five men sitting at different tables. Police are investigating whether the driver may have suffered a medical incident.
Surveillance video obtained by KPIX showed the vehicle speeding across two curbs and a parking lot road before slamming into the canopycovered dining area. The eight victims were sitting at various tables in the outdoor dining area.
The woman is the 40th person to die in a traffic collision in San Jose in 2020, according to police, and the 17th pedestrian who died after being struck by a vehicle.
