FCC pushes for clarification about protection for social media companies
Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai said Thursday that he wants to move forward with a proceeding to clarify the law about how much protection social media companies should have about items published through their services. Conservatives have called for changes to the law, Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which makes it impossible to sue web services over much of the content posted by their users or how they choose to moderate it. “Social media companies have a First Amendment right to free speech,” Pai said in a statement. “But they do not have a First Amendment right to a special immunity denied to other media outlets, such as newspapers and broadcasters.”
