Ex-Raiders lineman Henderson dies

Former Oakland Raiders offensive lineman Mario Henderson has died at 35.

The team, now the Las Vegas Raiders, announced Henderson’s death Wednesday. There was no cause of death given.

“Everyone will miss Mario’s sense of humor and passion for football and life,” the team said in a statement. “The prayers of the entire Raider Nation are with Mario’s family and loved ones.”

Henderson joined the Raiders in a draftday trade after being picked in the third round by the New England Patriots after his college career at Florida State. He played four seasons in Oakland, starting 28 games before leaving in 2010.

College football: The Mountain West Conference has canceled Saturday’s scheduled game, New Mexico at Colorado State, after a spike in coronaviru­s cases in New Mexico’s Bernalillo County. The conference declared the game a “no contest.”

San Jose State is scheduled to visit New Mexico on Oct. 31. College basketball: Pat Chambers resigned as Penn State’s men’s head coach following an internal investigat­ion by the school into allegation­s of inappropri­ate conduct. Chambers, 49, had been at Penn State for nine years and was coming off the team’s best season under him.

Penn State athletic director Sandy Barbour, the former Cal AD, said during a news conference that she would not disclose details of the school’s investigat­ion, but did say NCAA matters were not part of the investigat­ion.

Assistant coach Jim Ferry was elevated to interim head coach for the coming season.

Soccer: In Champions League group play, Real Madrid lost 32 loss to visiting Shakhtar Donetsk, and defending champion Bayern Munich crushed visiting Atlético Madrid 40.

Wins for Liverpool ( 10 at Ajax Amsterdam) and Manchester City ( 31 at Porto) capped a good round for English clubs.
