San Leandro officers shoot armed man
San Leandro police critically wounded a 43yearold man who pointed a gun at them late Saturday night after a traffic stop and pursuit near San Leandro High School, according to authorities.
Police said a semiautomatic firearm was found during a search of the vehicle.
The man was transported to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
No officers were injured in the third officerinvolved shooting in the East Bay city since midApril.
Just after 9 p. m., police tried to stop a silver sedan near 148th and Wake avenues, and a pursuit ensued for more than 10 blocks. The sedan
stopped near 137th Avenue and School Street and the driver escaped on foot into a backyard.
More officers responded to search the area, but the hunt had been called off when two officers, thinking the man was probably on the 1700 block of 137th Avenue, decided to comb the area in an undercover cruiser. Minutes before midnight, a second silver sedan pulled up behind the officers, who were parked east of
Bancroft Avenue on 137th Avenue.
As the officers exited the car, the driver raised a gun above the dashboard and in the direction of the officers, police said. The officers fired at least 12 rounds at the driver, striking him at least three times in his upper torso, said Lt. Ted Henderson.
Neither officer had been involved in a shooting before. The two were placed on administrative leave, protocol as a multilevel review is conducted, including an investigation by the Alameda County district attorney.
