Gonzaga women seen as WCC’s best

The Gonzaga women joined their male counterpar­ts as the choice by West Coast Conference coaches to win a conference basketball championsh­ip this season.

Gonzaga received seven of the 10 firstplace votes to finish with 79 points, ahead of BYU ( two firstplace votes, 73 points) and Portland ( one, 64). St. Mary’s was picked fifth with Santa Clara and USF in ninth and 10th, respective­ly. On Monday, the Gonzaga men were the overwhelmi­ng choice of the coaches to win the WCC title.

St. Mary’s junior guard Sam Simons was the only Bay Area player on the women’s AllWCC preseason team. 1 Three men’s tournament­s scheduled for next month — the Wooden Legacy in Anaheim and the Charleston Classic and the Myrtle Beach Invitation­al, both in South Carolina — have been postponed until 2021 because of the coronaviru­s.
