Clemson QB Lawrence tests positive for virus
Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence has tested positive for coronavirus, Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney said in a statement released by the school Thursday night.
Swinney said Lawrence is in isolation with mild symptoms and will miss No. 1 Clemson’s game Saturday against Boston College.
Individuals who test positive for the coronavirus must isolate for a minimum of 10 days, meaning that Clemson ( 60) is unlikely to have Lawrence back when it plays No. 4 Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., on Nov. 7.
Lawrence, a junior from Georgia, is a leading contender for the Heisman Trophy and potentially the top overall pick in next year’s NFL draft. He led the Tigers to a national championship as a freshman and back to the College Football playoff championship game last season.
With Lawrence out, freshman D. J. Uiagalelei is expected to start against Boston College. Uiagalelei has appeared in five games this season, completing 12 of 19 passes for 102 yards.
Nogo for Nebraska: The Big Ten denied Nebraska’s request to play a nonconference opponent Saturday to replace a game with Wisconsin that was canceled because the Badgers had a spike in coronavirus cases.
Nebraska Chancellor Ronnie Green and athletic director Bill Moos released a joint statement saying the school had explored the possibility of securing another opponent. The Big Ten is playing only conference games in an abbreviated schedule that started last week.
Chattanooga athletic director Mark Wharton confirmed to CBS Sports that the school was in negotiations with Nebraska.
“Ultimately, the Big Ten Conference did not approve our request, and we respect their decision,” Nebraska officials said.
Wisconsin officials said the number of active coronavirus cases within the football program increased to 16 on Thursday.
