Deadly crash: A car driving the wrong way on a South Carolina interstate caused a wreck that killed five people early Sunday, troopers said. All five people in the two cars were trapped in the wreckage on Interstate 385 in Laurens County and had to be cut from the crumpled metal. Four of them died at the scene and the fifth person died at the hospital, South Carolina Trooper Joe Hovis said. The wreck happened when a car heading the wrong way in the southbound lanes of I385 near Laurens hit another head on around 2: 15 a. m., Hovis said in a statement. A special team of state troopers is investigating the wreck.

Officer charged: A Nashville police officer who was hired after fatally shooting someone as a security guard two years ago is charged with seconddegree murder in the shooting outside the restaurant where he worked. Nathan Glass, a 26yearold white officer, faces an indictment in the October 2018 death of Deangelo Knox, a 25yearold Black man who was engaged in a shootout with another car outside the Nashville restaurant. Glass said he shot out of selfdefense and defense of others. But the NAACP of Nashville said the shooting was unjustified.

Police settlement: Baltimore officials are set to approve a roughly $ 8 million settlement to two men who went to prison after drugs were planted on them a decade ago during an encounter with members of a rogue police unit that brutalized, robbed and falsely arrested residents. The city’s spending board has approved several settlements in recent weeks stemming from the misconduct of members of the Gun Trace Task Force, a once lauded group that was supposed to take guns off the streets of Baltimore. The settlement for Umar Burley and Brent Matthews is the largest settlement in connection with the task force.

Bribery case: The chairman of a Massachusetts tribe and an architecture firm owner have been charged in a bribery scheme involving the tribe’s plans to build a resort casino, federal prosecutors said. Cedric Cromwell, of Attleboro, is accused of using his position as chairman of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe to extort tens of thousands of dollars in bribes from David DeQuattro, of Warwick, R. I., who owns an architecture and design company. Both pleaded not guilty Friday. Between 2014 and 2017, prosecutors said DeQuattro provided Cromwell with payments and other benefits valued at nearly $ 60,000 in exchange for nearly $ 5 million in construction contracts with the tribe. The tribe voted to remove Cromwell as chair later Friday.

Assault arrest: A man has been arrested in connection with an unprovoked assault against Rick Moranis that occurred as the actor was walking near New York City’s Central Park in October. Police said Marquis Ventura, 35, whom authorities listed as homeless, was detained Saturday. Moranis, known for his roles in movies such as “Ghostbusters” “Spaceballs,” was walking on a sidewalk when he was attacked. Video released by police showed a man wearing a black “I ( heart) NY” sweatshirt hit Moranis with a sucker punch and knock him to the ground.
