NEWS OF THE DAY

From Across the Nation

-

➊ Mall shooting: A 15yearold boy was arrested in connection with a shooting at a suburban Milwaukee mall that injured eight people, authorities said Sunday. Wauwatosa Police Chief Barry Weber said the shooting happened during a dispute Friday afternoon between two groups. He said four bystanders suffered what were believed to be nonlife threatening injuries. Investigators said the suspect ran out of the mall alongside other other people. “We do know there was some sort of altercation, and that’s when the bullets started flying,” Weber said. The name of the suspect has not been released.

➋ Voice of America: A federal judge in Washington has ruled against the head of the agency that runs the Voice of America and other U. S. funded news outlets who was accused of trying to turn it into a propaganda vehicle to promote President Trump’s agenda. The preliminary injunction issued late Friday effectively bars U. S. Agency for Global Media CEO Michael Pack from making personnel decisions and interfering in editorial operations. Pack proceeded to purge the leadership of several divisions. The director and deputy director of VOA resigned just days before the firings. The lawsuit filed by five executives who had been fired or suspended accused Pack of violating the “statutory firewall” intended to protect the news organizations from political interference.

➌ Restaurant attack: Authorities arrested a man in an attack at a fast food restaurant in Bellevue, Neb., in which two employees were fatally shot and two others were wounded. Roberto Carlos Silva Jr., 23, was booked into jail early Sunday on suspicion of firstdegree murder in Saturday night’s attack at a Sonic Drivein. Officers responding to a report of a burning vehicle found the four victims. Silva was quickly taken into custody, police said.

➍ Gang arrests: California authorities say they have dismantled the leadership of the white supremacist Aryan Brotherhood as part of a statewide takedown of the prison gang and its associates in the Fresnecks street gang in Fresno County. The investigation includes federal and state charges for more than 100 defendants in California, Nevada and Montana. Half of the suspects were arrested last week, and others remain at large. The Fresnecks worked under the direction of the Aryan Brotherhood through contraband cell phones in state prisons. “We got up on their phones, and we listened to the crimes being ordered and carried out in realtime,” said McGregor Scott, U. S. attorney for the Eastern District of California.

➎ Burger frenzy: The opening of an InNOut Burger in Aurora, Colo., sparked traffic jams, a parking lot scuffle, and a wait for food lasting up to 14 hours. Burger fans flocked to the restaurant Friday. By afternoon, authorities estimated the line stretched more than a mile. “It’s hard to estimate. What we know is the line wrapped around the mall twice, and there were some nearby hwy backups,” police tweeted. “We anticipate continued traffic impacts in the coming days so please use alternate routes, maybe you’ll find another great local eatery to support.”
