Without 2 key men, Cal still tips Seattle
Playing without injured guard Matt Bradley and forward Grant Anticevich for the second straight game, Cal overcame an 11point deficit to get past Seattle 7065 at Haas Pavilion on Tuesday afternoon.
The Bears ( 54) trailed most of the game and didn’t take the lead for good until Joel Brown hit a 3pointer with 31⁄ minutes
2 to play to put Cal up 6059. That began a 100 run.
With Bradley, Cal’s leading scorer at 19.1 points per game, sidelined by an ankle injury and Anticevich ( 10.3 ppg) recovering from an appendectomy last week, Cal head coach Mark Fox has had to get creative with his rotations.
“We’re severely disjointed with the lineups that we’re playing,” Fox said. “We just had to manufacture and find a way to win, which fortunately we did.”
Ryan Betley had a teamhigh 17 points for the Bears, who have won three straight. Fox expects Bradley to return for Cal’s next game, Dec. 31 at Oregon, but Anticevich is out indefinitely.
Riley Grigsby, the son of
former Cal forward Al Grigsby, scored a gamehigh 20 points for the Redhawks ( 55).
San Diego State 74, St. Mary’s 49: In San Luis Obispo, Nathan Mensah went 8- for- 9 from the floor en route to 18 points, and he grabbed 13 rebounds as the Aztecs ( 6- 1) ended the Gaels’ winning streak at eight games. St. Mary’s played without injured swingman Alex Ducas and guard Leemet Bockler.
Colorado State 70, Santa Clara 57: In Santa Cruz, the Rams ( 3- 1) handed the Broncos ( 6- 1) their first loss of the season. Santa Clara, which went 5- for- 28 ( 17.9%) from beyond the arc, got a game- high 17 points from guard Christian Carlyle.
