English gets 1st win on tour in 7 years

-

Harris English went more than seven years without winning on the PGA Tour, and he didn’t mind going one extra hole to win the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.

English missed a 10foot eagle putt in regulation on the par5 18th hole at Kapalua for a 4underpar 69 to force a playoff with Joaquin Niemann, and English ended it on the 18th with a 6foot birdie. In the playoff, English lagged a long putt from off the front of the green to 6 feet for the winner

“When I was a kid, I loved having the ball when the clock’s running out in basketball,” English said. “I love the situations, and I crave getting back into that.”

English won for the third time in his career, and his first title since the OHL Classic at Mayakoba at the end of 2013.

Justin Thomas apologized for muttering a homophobic slur after missing a 5foot putt on the fourth hole of the Tournament of Champions on Saturday.

“It’s inexcusable,” Thomas said. “First off, I just apologize. I’m an adult. I’m a grown man, there’s absolutely no reason for me to say anything like that. It’s terrible. I’m extremely embarrassed. It’s not who I am, it’s not the kind of person that I am or anything that I do.”

NHL: The Vancouver Canucks canceled training camp practices and workouts due to potential exposure to the coronavirus. They’re the fourth such team affected, along with the Stars, Blue Jackets and Penguins.

Obituary: Donald “Dee” Rowe, who coached UConn men’s basketball into the national spotlight from 1969 until he retired in 1977, died at age 91 in Storrs, Conn.
