Najee Harris through the years
Childhood: Harris spends time in homeless shelters and hotels as a child before moving to Antioch at age 13. Tianna Hicks, a single mom to Najee and his four older siblings, acknowledges the difficulties they faced produced their perseverance and work ethic.
April 2015: Harris makes a verbal commitment to Alabama. The pledge is not binding, and Harris is still a prize to pursue.
Fall 2016: In a senior season chronicled by Ron Kroichick in The Najee Chronicles, Harris rushes for 2,776 yards and scores 36 touchdowns. Harris finishes his prep career with 7,948 rushing yards, the fourthhighest total in California history, according to Cal- Hi Sports. He also scores 99 touchdowns.
Jan. 8, 2017: Harris, tabbed the No. 1 overall prospect in the country by Rivals, Scout and PrepStar, reaffirms his commitment to Alabama. Jan. 8, 2018: Harris caps his freshman year by leading Alabama with 64 rushing yards in a 26- 23 national- title game victory over Georgia. Aug. 31, 2020: Harris organizes a march for racial justice, in the wake of police shootings of unarmed Black people across the nation. Harris, wearing a T- shirt with the words, “Defend Black Lives,” removes his mask and speaks to the crowd. “This is not a problem that will simply come and go in a news cycle,” he says. “It is not a problem that will eventually dissipate without action. Being here today is a huge step, but I ask you: What’s next?” Harris’ mom, Tianna, is among those walking alongside Harris.
Dec. 28, 2020: Harris earns first- team All- America honors, leading a contingent of five Alabama players on the first- team offense.
