Resident of Redwood City “To everything there is a Season and a time to every purpose under Heaven” Ecclesiasties 3:1

With great sadness, the family of Patricia Marie Englert, 95, of Redwood City, California, acknowledges her passing on February 14, 2021. Pat entered into her heavenly life confident that she would be reunited with her beloved husband, Leo, and sons, Leo III, Bill, and Jimmy. Pat was born in San Francisco on June 28, 1925 in the middle of the “Roaring Twenties” and before the “Great Depression” and was raised as an only child lovingly by parents, William and Helen Baker.

As a young girl growing up, Pat spent a great deal of time at her parents’ ranch in Loma Mar near Pescadero where a wide assortment of animals such as horses, lion cubs, a bear, skunks, cows, sheep, and dogs could be found roaming throughout the property. This cultivated a love of all animals, especially English and French Bulldogs, which would last her entire life. Pat met her first and life-long friend, Dorothy Vaio, as they were little girls growing up in the St. Francis Woods neighborhood of San Francisco. Their friendship would span ten decades.

Pat married Leo T.Englert, a lieutenant in the US Navy, on September 30, 1944 at St. Vincent de Paul Cathedral in San Francisco. They remained happily married for nearly 59 years until Leo’s passing in August of 2003. Together Leo and Pat raised their six children with a strong Catholic faith in homes in San Francisco, San Carlos, and Atherton. In 1977, after Leo’s retirement, they built a beautiful home on the north shore of Lake Tahoe in Incline Village, Nevada and spent over 25 years enjoying the beauty and splendor of mountain living. There they became members of St. Francis Catholic Church and developed friendships with many parish families. Summers with good friends, Ted and Pat Smyth, were spent at their ranch in Wyoming with Pat always at the wheel driving. Leo loved learning and meeting new, interesting people so dozens of cruises were experienced exploring all continents in the world except Antarctica. The Englert family will fondly remember all of their gatherings at which they would celebrate birthdays, the holidays, recitals, or just Sunday dinners. Laughter and storytelling would always be included on the menu.

Pat was very generous in her support of philanthropies which included St. Mary’s High School, St. Mary’s College, and the St.

Francis Center where she volunteered upon her return to the Bay Area. There she met two wonderful new friends, Sr. Christina Heltsley and Jackie Murphy.

Pat will best be remembered for her witty personality, generosity toward others, sharp sense of humor, love of the mountains, watching The Rachel Maddox Show on MSNBC and the Food Channel, but most importantly, her undying devotion to her faith, family, and friends. As a devout Catholic who attended St. Pius Catholic Church in Redwood City, Pat could be found reciting her daily prayers always tightly holding her rosary beads in her hands.

Pat is survived by her children Paul Englert (Kathy), Sue MacDonald (Jim), Patti Gatzert (Norm),daughter-in-law Suzy Englert, grandchildren Amy Gatzert, Carly Gatzert (Dale), Matt MacDonald (Sarah), Jesse Englert (Meghan), Jessica Kutnezoff (Sam), Missy Smith (Adrian), and James Jr. Englert (Erica), and ten great-grandchildren. We mourn Pat’s absence but we celebrate a life well lived. Her legacy of family, laughter, and love will live on through all the many lives she touched.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to Pat’s devoted caregivers, Luz and Kalala, who provided Pat with so much love, support, and tender loving care these past few months.

Burial services will be held at Alta Mesa Memorial Park in Palo Alto on Friday, February 26th but due to COVID-19 restrictions, only immediate family will attend. A Celebration of Life for Pat will take place at a later date when social gatherings can be safely held again.

Those wishing to honor Pat’s amazing life can donate in her memory to the St. Francis Center (151 Buckingham Ave. Redwood City, CA 94063).

Forever in our hearts, Pat-Mom-Granny.. . Until we meet again.
