No. 14 Texas survives No. 17 Kansas in OT

Courtney Ramey scored 15 points and made two free throws with a minute left in overtime to give Texas the lead as the 14thranked Longhorns earned a regularsea­son sweep of No. 17 Kansas with a 7572 win Tuesday night.

Kansas had a chance to tie after Ramey’s free throws, but Jalen Wilson lost the ball driving for a layup. Kai Jones made one free throw for Texas (146, 85 Big 12) with 5 seconds left for the final margin.

Ochai Ogbajai scored 17 points for Kansas (178, 116), which had its fivegame win streak snapped. The Jayhawks lost to Texas twice in the regular season for the first time since the Big 12 went to roundrobin play in 20112012. Texas’ 25point win at Kansas on Jan. 2 was the Jayhawks’ worst home loss under coach Bill Self.

#2 Baylor 77, Iowa State 72: Adam Flagler scored a season-high 22 points, Jared Butler had 15 of his 18 points after halftime and the host Bears (18-0, 10-0 Big 12) overcame the rust of a three-week break due to coronaviru­s issues to move to 18-0 for the first time in school history. The Cyclones (2-17, 0-14) jumped out to a 15-4 lead and led 32-15 before Baylor recovered. “Really excited to win, really excited to be back,” Baylor coach Scott Drew said. “Obviously does three weeks affect your play? 100 percent.”

Michigan State 81, #5 Illinois 72: Aaron Henry scored 20 points and Joshua Langford had 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds as the Spartans (12-9, 6-9 Big Ten) got a desperatel­y needed quality win to bolster their chances of playing in 23 straight NCAA Tournament­s. The Fighting Illini (16-6, 12-4) had won a Big Ten-best seven straight games.

Kansas State 62, #7 Oklahoma 57: Mike McGuirl scored 19 points, hitting three straight 3s in the final minutes, and the host Wildcats (7-18, 3-13 Big 12) stunned the Sooners (14-6, 9-5), who led by six with three minutes to play before McGuirl took over. “I like to let it fly and I thought I was shooting well so I trusted myself,” McGuirl said. “The shots were able to fall and I just believed.”

#8 Villanova 81, St. John’s 58: Caleb Daniels scored 17 points, and Collin Gillespie and Jermaine Samuels each had 14 as the host Wildcats (15-3, 10-2 Big East) avenged a Feb. 3 loss to the Red Storm (14-9, 8-9) in New York. #10 West Virginia 74, TCU 66: Taz Sherman scored 23 points and Derek Culver had 18 points and 14 rebounds as the visiting Mountainee­rs (16-6, 9-4 Big 12) topped the Horned Frogs (11-10, 4-8).

Georgia Tech 69, #16 Virginia Tech 53: Moses Wright scored 17 of his 26 points in the second half and grabbed 10 rebounds in the third straight victory fore the Yellow Jackets (12-8, 8-6). Keve Aluma had 12 points and 14 rebounds for the Hokies (14-5, 8-4), whose 53 points were a season low. Mississipp­i 60, #24 Missouri 53: Devontae Shuler scored 14 points as visiting Ole Miss (13-9, 8-7 SEC) swept the Tigers (14-7, 7-7).

Arizona State 97, Washington 64: Remy Martin scored 26 points and Kimani Lawrence added 22 and the host Sun Devils (8-11, 5-8 Pac-12) walloped the Huskies (5-18, 4-14) to end a two-game losing streak. Pacific 77, San Diego 67: Pierre Crockrell II had a career-high 21 points as the visiting Tigers (8-7, 5-6 WCC) beat the Toreros (3-9, 2-6).

WOMEN

#8 Maryland 111, Iowa 93: Senior Katie Benzan broke her school record with 10 3-pointers and scored a career-high 29 points to lead the host Terrapins (17-2, 13-1 Big Ten). Hawkeyes freshman Caitlin Clark was equally impressive and made nine shots from beyond the arc, one shy of a program record, and scored 29 of her 34 points in the first half for Iowa (12-7, 8-7).

No fans: The WCC announced Tuesday morning that it will not allow fans into Orleans Arena in Las Vegas for its men’s and women’s conference tournament­s, which begin March 4. The WCC said Clark County would have permitted a limited number fans, but the conference declined. The brackets for the tournament­s will be revealed Sunday.
