After strong start, Bears stumble against Beavers

Roman Silva scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half and Oregon State beat Cal 5957 on Thursday night at Haas Pavilion.

Silva scored seven points as the Beavers (1211, 89 Pac12) opened the second half with a 154 run to take the lead for good.

Oregon State matched its largest lead at 5750 on Ethan Thompson’s jumper with four minutes left. Makale Foreman answered with a 3pointer for the Bears (818, 316), the last field goal of the game with 3:29 left.

Thompson had 12 points, Jarod Lucas scored 10, and Warith Alatishe had 11 rebounds to go with seven points. The Beavers were 0for10 from 3point range. The Bears were 2for17 from beyond the arc.

Matt Bradley had 20 points and Andre Kelly added 15 for Cal, which made its first seven field goal attempts and led by 12 after seven minutes.

#1 Gonzaga 89, Santa Clara 75: Corey Kispert scored 25 points, Drew Timme had 16 of his 18 points in the second half and the Bulldogs (230, 140 WCC) beat the Broncos (107, 45) to extend their home winning streak to 50 games.

Timme, limited to eight minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, made 7 of 9 shots after intermissi­on as the Bulldogs pulled away from a 4038 halftime lead.

Guglielmo Caruso led Santa Clara with 19 points and Giordan Williams added 18.

BYU 79, USF 73: Alex Barcello was 7for7 from 3point range and scored 29 points to lead the host Cougars (185, 93 WCC) past the Dons (1012, 48).

Julian Rishwain scored a careerhigh 25 points, Jamaree Bouyea added 16 and Khalil Shabazz had 12 for USF, which has lost five in a row.

⏩ Santa Clara’s game against Portland on Saturday was canceled. The Pilots have paused activities after a positive coronaviru­s test in the program.

Portland’s status for the WCC tourney that begins March 4 is uncertain.

WOMEN

BYU 66, Santa Clara 63: Shaylee Gonzales scored 20 points, including 10 in the third quarter, and the Cougars (173, 132 WCC) overcame a 17point secondhalf deficit to beat the host Broncos (1310, 98).

Lindsey VanAllen scored 17 points to lead Santa Clara, which was 1for8 from the floor in the final 2:31 of play.

San Diego at USF, canceled: The Dons’ home game against the Toreros was canceled after San Diego reported a positive coronaviru­s test in its program.

San Diego also canceled Saturday’s game at Santa Clara and announced that it will not play in the WCC tournament.
