No. 1 Zags rally past BYU, stay unbeaten
Jalen Suggs hit two late 3pointers and scored 23 points, helping topranked Gonzaga overcome Brigham Young 8878 in the WCC tournament title game in Las Vegas on Tuesday night.
The Bulldogs (260) have won all but one of their games by double digits this season. Gonzaga has won a schoolrecord 30 straight games over two seasons and will be the first team since Kentucky in 2015 to enter the NCAA Tournament undefeated.
The Cougars (206) were up 5339 late in the first half and by 12 at the break. Trevin Knell led BYU with 20 points. The Cougars were the last team to beat Gonzaga, 9178 on Feb. 22, 2020.
They went 21for31 (67.7%) from the floor Tuesday, including 9for13 (69.2%) from beyond the arc in the first half. It was a different story in the second half: 10for36 (27.8%) from the field, including 2for15 (13.3%) from long distance.
Bids clinched: In Indianapolis, Torrey Patton had 23 points and 10 rebounds as Cleveland State (19-7) picked up an 80-69 win over Oakland (12-18) in the Horizon League championship game. Former Cal guard Dennis Gates will take the Vikings to the NCAA Tournament berth in his second season as their head coach . ... In Harrisonburg, Va., Mate Okros scored 14 points as Drexel (12-7) earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 25 years with a 63-56 victory over Elon (10-9) in the championship game of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament . ... Damian Chong Qui scored 21 points and visiting Mount St. Mary’s (12-10) grabbed a 73-68 win over Bryant (15-6) in the Northeast Conference tournament title game . ... In Sioux Falls, S.D., Max Abmas scored 23 points, Francis Lacis made a gamesaving block and steal, and Oral Roberts (16-10) eked out a 75-72 win over North Dakota State (15-12) in the Summit League tournament championship game.
Mobley sweeps Pac-12 awards: USC’s Evan Mobley was named the Pac-12’s Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year.
