Padres’ Tatis hurts shoulder, leaves game

-

The flash and dash of Fernando Tatis Jr. came to a sudden halt Tuesday when the Padres shortstop slowly walked off the field after making an awkward throw in an exhibition game.

The Padres said Tatis had discomfort in his nonthrowing left shoulder and would be evaluated Wednesday.

Tatis went into the hole to backhand a grounder in the third inning hit by the Reds’ Jonathan India in Peoria, Ariz. Tatis’ throwing motion seemed off, even though he got the out.

Tatis, 22, began to leave the diamond and was met by manager Jayce Tingler and a trainer. After a few minutes in the dugout, Tatis headed toward the clubhouse accompanied by a trainer.

Tatis signed the longest contract in baseball history on Feb. 22, a $340 million, 14year deal.

Jays’ Yates to miss season:

Blue Jays reliever Kirby Yates is expected to have seasonending surgery on his right elbow, general manager Ross Atkins said.

Yates, a 2019 AllStar with the Padres, was expected to be Toronto’s closer after signing a $5.5 million, oneyear deal in the offseason.

The Blue Jays also said outfielder George Springer will miss the next four or five days because of a strained oblique muscle and lefthander Robbie Ray will skip at least one spring training start after slipping on a staircase and bruising his elbow.

Rangers’ Davis hurt: Rangers designated hitter Khris Davis strained his left quadriceps running out a bunt single in and may start the season on the injured list.

The former Oakland DH pulled up before reaching first base and left the game against the Angels.

Rockies’ Freeland hurting: Rockies lefthander Kyle Freeland was taken out in the third inning against the A’s after straining his pitching shoulder.

After throwing a pitch, he walked to the side of the mound, bent down in discomfort, dropped his glove and grabbed just underneath his shoulder. The Rockies are waiting for further tests to determine the severity of the strain.

“We’re keeping our fingers crossed and hopefully we get some good news out of this,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “But I’m concerned.”

More injuries: Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen has a “hairline stress fracture of his right lateral forearm at the radial end,” Zach Buchanan of the Athletic tweeted. There’s no timetable for his return . ... The Angels are shutting down former A’s infielder Franklin Barreto for at least four weeks because of elbow inflammation, MLB.com reported.
