American Conservatory Theater is delaying inperson offerings until January, the company announced Tuesday, March 23.

In the meantime, it will add a virtual world premiere commission by San Francisco native Christopher Chen to its lineup. That still untitled show, running May 28June 27 following a premiere at ACT’s May 22 gala, will be interactive and shown before small numbers of people at a time. The show is expected to be performed by a celebrated but tobeannounced Bay Area artist who seems to be making truetolife confessions but might prove an unreliable narrator. Like ACT’s coming film “Animal Wisdom,” it’s available as an addon purchase to the new season.

The inperson season is set to launch in the new year at the Geary Theater with pure joy: “Freestyle Love Supreme,” which was previously announced, now has new run dates of Jan. 21Feb. 13. The improvised hiphop invention of “Hamilton” creators played as part of SF Sketchfest last year and was the subject of the Hulu documentary “We Are Freestyle Love Supreme.”

Up next, Pam MacKinnon directs the late Maria Irene Fornés’ allfemale “Fefu and Her Friends” (March 24May 1), which the company bills as its first immersive production. Per the 1977 play’s instructions, audiences are broken up into four groups to visit four scenes staged in different spaces, all set in rooms of a home.

The season concludes with the previously announced “The Lehman Trilogy” (April 20May 22), Stefano Massini’s play, adapted by Ben Power and directed by Sam Mendes, chronicling 163 years in the unlikely rise and meteoric fall of the notorious banking family, followed by “Soul Train” (Sept. 16Oct. 23), the world premiere of the Broadwaybound musical about the dancefueled TV show. Dominique Morisseau writes, Kamilah Forbes directs, and Camille A. Brown choreographs, backed by executive producers who include Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and Tony Cornelius (“Soul Train” host Don Cornelius’ son).

Subscriptions ($95$385) are on sale by phone at 4157492228 or online at www. actsf.org.
