U.S. soccer men lose
Uriel Antuna scored just before halftime and Mexico defeated the U.S. 10 in CONCACAF Olympic qualifying to win Group A in Guadalajara.
Both teams already had qualified for Sunday’s semifinals; the winners of those games will clinch Olympic berths in Tokyo this summer.
The U.S. will play the winner of Thursday night’s game between Canada and Honduras.
The American men last made the Olympics in 2008.
⏩ The Earthquakes will play five of their first seven games at home as the MLS announced its full 2021 schedule.
San Jose will open its 34game season at Houston on April 16, followed by its home opener at Earthquakes Stadium against FC Dallas on April 24.

⏩ The San Francisco Glens Soccer Club (USL League Two, American soccer’s fourth division) announced plans to develop its own soccerspecific facility at Treasure Island. Construction is set to begin this summer, with kick off by spring 2022.
⏩ Qualifying for the 2022 World Cup began for European teams with a slipup by France to open its title defense (held 11 at home by Ukraine), a big loss for the Netherlands (42 to Turkey) and a 31 win by topranked Belgium over Wales.
Norway beat Gibraltar 30 after protesting humanrights abuses in Qatar, the 2022 World Cup host country; and European champion Portugal beat Azerbaijan 10.
Golf: At a topsyturvy opening round of the Dell Technologies Match Play in Austin, Texas, Rory McIlroy endured his worst loss (after 13 holes to Ian Poulter) in 10 years, and Justin Thomas (2) joined Bryson DeChambeau (5) as top players who lost opening matches.
Dustin Johnson, the top seed, closed out Adam Long on the 18th hole. Cal alum Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele had to settle for draws.
NFL: The Indianapolis Colts resigned freeagent wide receiver T.Y. Hilton to a oneyear contract worth $10 million . ... The Los Angeles Chargers agreed to terms with outside linebacker Kyler Fackrell, who had four sacks in nine starts for the New York Giants in 2020.
Colleges: Stanford’s threegame home baseball series against Cal State Bakersfield, scheduled for this weekend, was canceled as the Roadrunners will pause as a result of health and safety protocols.
Also on pause is the San Jose State football team. Spring activities are suspended because of coronavirus cases and contact tracing within the program.
Figure skating: Fremont’s Karen Chen helped put the U.S. in range of the maximum three berths at next year’s Winter Olympics in Beijing with a fourthplace finish after the short program at the World Figure Skating Championships in Stockhom.
Chen and Bradie Tennell must finish a combined 13th or better; they’re at 11th after Tenell, a twotime U.S. champion, finished seventh. Anna Shcherbakova, Russia’s threetime national champion, is in first.
“I want to deliver the free skate that I know I’m capable of,” said Chen, the bronze medalist at nationals who was placed on the U.S. team ahead of runnerup Amber Glenn because of her international experience. “I’ve yet to show that at Skate America or nationals, so I feel like this is the time.”
The women’s free skate is Friday.
