Success still follows California’s Calcagno

- By Mitch Stephens MaxPreps senior writer Mitch Stephens covers high school sports for The San Francisco Chronicle.

Things we’ve learned from three weeks of spring high school football.

⏩ Danny Calcagno still can coach the preps. The last time we saw the 52yearold leading high school kids, he was guiding San Leandro to four straight North Coast Section 4A title games (the last in 2002) — losing all to four of De La SalleConcord’s best teams — before he took over Chabot College for 13 seasons.

In his first season at CaliforniaSan Ramon, he has the Grizzlies at 21 and ranked No. 20 by The Chronicle after a 3831 East Bay Athletic League overtime win over previous No. 17 Monte VistaDanville. Jake Hubbard rushed for 166 yards and three touchdowns and Teddy Booras passed for 306 yards and two scores, one to Calcagno’s son, Jake Calcagno (12 catches for 151 yards).

⏩ Booras leads the NCS with 727 passing yards, followed by AcalanesLafayette senior Brady Huchingson (608) and Bishop O’DowdOakland’s Jesse Madden (567), grandson of Hall of Fame coach John Madden.

⏩ Dorian Hale isn’t among the leaders, but on Saturday, he became only the third De La Salle quarterback to go over 4,000 career passing yards during a 496 win over San Ramon Valley. The 6foot, 185pound senior and Sacramento State signee completed just 3 of 5 passes for 156 yards and joined Bart Houston and Matt Guttierez as the only Spartans to surpass that mark.

⏩ St. Ignatius coach John Regalia does not exaggerate. On Friday, he called Jahsai Shannon one of the top athletes in the Bay Area and promised a big season. On Saturday, Shannon returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown in a 420 win over thenNo. 21 Riordan. Shannon, who scored another firstquarter TD, had one interception and two picks nullified by penalties.

⏩ VintageNapa improved to 30 after a 550 pummeling of American Canyon, which came in 20. The Crushers, who have outscored their opponents 1656, rushed for 388 yards on 32 carries (Mosaati Schaumkel led the way with 114 yards on four carries). The Crushers are averaging 490 yards, 14.7 yards per carry and 31.6 yards per reception.

Remembering Laclergue: A celebration of life is being planned for longtime CapuchinoSan Bruno coach Don Laclergue, who died this month just short of his 93rd birthday. Born in Oakland and raised in San Francisco, Laclergue coached numerous sports from 1952 through ’88, but was best known for his success in baseball before focusing on girls sports late in his career. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Jean, and is survived by three children, six grandchildren and three greatgreat grandchildren.
