Bruins rally for win over Devils

-

Charlie Coyle and David Pastrnak each scored in the shootout, and the Boston Bruins rallied for a 54 home victory over the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night.

Brad Marchand, Charlie McAvoy, Nick Ritchie and Matt Grzelcyk scored in regulation for the Bruins, who scored twice in the final 9:38 of the third period. Jaroslav Halak stopped 31 shots.

“Sometimes it’s not going to be pretty, sometimes you’re going to make mistakes, but it shows the character that we have,” Coyle said. “Every point is crucial from here on out.”

The Devils were lined up for another win against Boston before McAvoy scored with 9:38 left in the third and Grzelcyk tied it with four minutes to go on a wrister from above the left circle.

“That’s the staple of our team,” Marchand said. “When we’re hard on pucks and drive, we’re a hard team to play. We took over that game in the third period.”

Coyle and Pastrnak both shifted around goalie Mackenzie Blackwood before tucking the puck into the net as Boston scored on its only two shootout chances.

The Devils had the puck in Boston’s zone for nearly all of a power play late in OT after McAvoy was whistled for slashing Damon Severson.

“That’s the disappointing part,” Devils coach Lindy Ruff said. “It’s frustrating, disappointing our power play hasn’t been able to break through and win these games.”

Blackhawks 2, Hurricanes 1: Dylan Strome and Alex DeBrincat scored in a 3:33 span early in the second period to push host Chicago past Carolina. Andrei Svechnikov scored for Carolina, which missed a chance to leapfrog both Tampa Bay and Florida into first place in the Central Division.

Predators 3, Stars 2: Eeli Tolvanen scored at 1:29 of overtime to give

Nashville a home win over Dallas. Calle Jarnkrok had a goal and an assist and Roman Josi also scored for the Predators, who extended their winning streak to a season-best six games.

Panthers 4, Red Wings 1: Carter Verhaeghe scored two goals to lift Florida to a home win over Detroit. Brett Connolly scored his 100th NHL goal and Jonathan Huberdeau also scored a goal for the Panthers, who have won three straight games.

Blue Jackets 3, Lightning 1: David Savard scored his first goal in two years and Columbus won at Tampa Bay. Elvis Merzlikins stopped 37 shots, helping the Blue Jackets snap a fourgame winless streak.

Rangers 5, Capitals 2: Artemi Panarin had a goal and two assists and host New York scored five unanswered goals to defeat Washington. Igor Shesterkin made 30 saves, improving to 3-0 against Washington.

Canadiens 4, Oilers 0: Brendan Gallagher and Artturi Lehkonen each had a goal and an assist to help Montreal return from a lengthy break and rout Edmonton at home. The Canadiens were playing for the first time since a win over Vancouver on March 20. Two days later, Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Joel Armia went on the NHL’s COVID list.
