‘Hamilton’ heading to Broadway San Jose
“Hamilton” is coming to San Jose for the first time, as the opening show in Broadway San Jose’s revised next season at the Center for Performing Arts, the company announced Monday, April 5.
LinManuel Miranda’s musical about the nation’s first secretary of the Treasury runs Oct. 1231 with a new touring cast and the original Tony Awardwinning creative team.
Productions of “Hairspray” (Nov. 2328) and “Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” (Jan. 1823) are scheduled to follow, according to the latest lineup.
“Tootsie” (April 1924), which adapts the 1982 Dustin Hoffman film, brings the season into next spring, followed by another blockbuster in “Dear Evan Hansen” (June 819), the Steven Levenson, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul musical that looks honestly and searchingly at teenage isolation and depression in the digital era.
The season concludes with Diane Paulus’ take on “1776,” which means that, with “Hamilton,” the founding fathers bookend Broadway San Jose’s season; connoisseurs of musical and American history alike might especially enjoy the juxtaposition of two wildly different stage representations of Thomas Jefferson.
Broadway San Jose also offers a lineup of addon shows not included in its subscription season: “Alton Brown Live: Beyond the Eats” (Nov. 15), “A Magical Cirque Christmas” (Dec. 30), “The Simon & Garfunkel Story” (Jan. 12), “Riverdance 25th Anniversary Show” (Feb. 2527), “Rent 25th Anniversary Farewell Tour” (April 810) and “Come From Away” (July 1217), the Irene Sankoff and David Hein musical about the rural Canadian town that, through pluck, a sense of humor and countless bits of everyday heroism, rallied to absorb thousands of stranded airline passengers on 9/11.
Subscriptions, which start at $280, are available beginning May 3 at www.broadwaysanjose.com.
