Jonathan Kaighn Smith
June 15, 1976 - April 9, 2021
Jonathan Smith passed away unexpectedly on April 9, at the age of 44. He was raised in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He attended The Hill School and Colgate University. After graduating college with a degree in Latin American Studies, he moved to San Francisco to begin his music career as a singer and guitar player. For several years, he toured both locally and internationally with his indie rock band The Hundred Days. Despite being shy in person, Jonathan had an unforgettable stage presence. Later on, he found a rewarding career as a psychotherapist in the East Bay where he also resided.
Jonathan was preceded in death by his sister, Alexis Smith. He was a loving husband to Sarah Rainer and an adoring father to his young son Alden Smith. He is survived by his parents, Stephen and Ruth Smith, brother Tyler Smith, his three niece sidekicks Serena, Arianna and Daisy Gomez, as well as numerous friends, extended family members, and creative collaborators.
In addition to being a devoted musician, Jonathan loved travel, hiking, making people laugh, photography, running steep trails, imagining screenplay and story ideas, his menagerie of pets and, above all else, spending time with his family.
Jonathan will be deeply missed by those he touched. A celebration of life service will be held on April 17 at 11:30 in the Swedenborgian Church of San Francisco’s garden.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in his name to National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
