McIlroy misses cut after spectator swipes his 6iron and takes a swing

-

Rory McIlroy was waiting to get his second round under way on the 10th hole at the Scottish Open when a spectator wandered on to the tee, had a dig into the fourtime major winner’s golf bag, and started taking swings with his 6iron.

It wasn’t long before the interloper, who smelled of alcohol according to McIlroy’s playing partner, Jon Rahm, was ejected from the tournament and taken into police custody.

McIlroy didn’t last much longer. After an evenpar round of 71, McIlroy missed the cut at the European Tour event on Friday in North Berwick and will be making an earlierthanplanned journey to the south of England for next week’s British Open.

He was 1under for the tournament, 10 shots off the lead held by Rahm, the topranked player in the world, and Belgium’s Thomas Detry — after their rounds of 65 — and firstround leader Jack Senior (67). They were all at 11under 131 overall.

“I was surprised,” McIlroy said of the incident. “It was handled efficiently and everything was OK. I had no idea who it was.”

Rahm said alcohol could be smelled on the spectator’s breath.

“After a little bit, when he walked back and they were taking him out, you could smell the reason why it happened,” Rahm said. “Me and Rory didn’t say anything. He was holding a 6iron and I didn’t want to get hurt.”

A day after making six straight birdies in an opening 10under 61, Nasa Hataoka had four in a row (Nos. 1417) to salvage a 69 for a 12under 130 total to the lead the Marathon LPGA Classic in Sylvania, Ohio. Her lead was cut from four to two strokes, with Monterey native Mina Harigae second after her second straight bogeyfree 66.

Luke List put togetherr seven birdies in an eighthole stretch in the middle of his round and posted an 8under 63.

That gave him a oneshot lead at 13under 129 over Sebastian Muñoz (67) going into the weekend at the PGA Tour’s TPC Deere Run at Silvis, Ill.

Jim Furyk shot a 6under 64, the best round in days at Omaha (Neb.) Country Club, to take a twostroke lead over Stephen Ames (73) at the U.S. Senior Open.

The 2003 U.S. Open champion and 17time PGA Tour winner rebounded from an opening 72 to get to 4under.
