Three things to watch
Previewing key events.
1. Women’s soccer (7 p.m. USA and 8:30 p.m. !38 ):
Sweden or Canada will come away with its first gold medal in a sport the United States dominated through its first five appearances in the Games (beginning in 1996 the U.S. won four golds and a silver). Sweden was the silver medalist in Rio, losing to Germany 21 in the title match. The Canadians, who knocked the Americans out of goldmedal contention with a 10 win in the semifinals, won bronze in each of the previous two Olympics. The Swedes have outscored their opponents 133, the Canadians 53.
2. Men’s diving (11 p.m., USA):
The 10meter platform preliminaries begin with Great Britain’s Tom Daley and China’s Yuan Cao expected to battle for the top spot — and this time, neither will have a partner. On Monday, Daley teamed with Matty Lee to win gold in 10meter synchronized diving, edging Cao and Aisen Chen 471.81 to 470.58. That is the only event Chinese divers did not win in the first six diving competitions. The victory was a personal breakthrough for Daley, who in his his fourth Games had won only a bronze (in synchronized in Rio de Janeiro in 2016).
3. Women’s 20kilometer race walk (12:30 a.m.,8 Friday, NBCSN):
Podium finish or not, Robyn Stevens of the U.S. brings into this race a compelling story of recovery. The Vacaville resident and San Jose State alum battled an eating disorder and retired from competition in 2003 but a decade later began a comeback that saw her reach the Olympic trials in 2016. In June she won the trials by more than four minutes (1:35.13), becoming the first woman from San Jose State to qualify for the U.S. Olympic track and field team since 1932.
