Patriots, Steelers pick up victories
Running back Rhamondre Stevenson, a 2021 fourth-round draft pick, had two touchdown runs — including a 91-yarder with just more than a minute to play — as the host New England Patriots beat Washington 22-13 in the exhibition opener for both teams Thursday night.
Quinn Nordin had three field goals for the Patriots, including a 50-yarder.
New England led 15-7 in the fourth quarter before Steven Montez took Washington on a 15-play, 92-yard drive he capped with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Lamar Miller with 1:25 left.
⏩ Pittsburgh’s Dwayne Haskins threw for 161 yards and a touchdown to lead the Steelers to a 24-16 exhibition win over the Eagles in Philadelphia.
Haskins, competing with Mason Rudolph to be the primary backup to Ben Roethlisberger, connected with Anthony Johnson on a 22-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.
Former 49ers quarterback Nick Mullens, No. 3 on the Eagles’ depth chart, was 1-for-5 for 4 yards with two interceptions.
Trade: The Steelers have agreed to a deal to acquire linebacker Joe Schobert, a 2017 Pro Bowler, from the Jaguars, NFL.com reported.
Schobert, who is in the second year of a five-year, $53 million deal, would be expected to start alongside Devin Bush at insider linebacker, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
Quarterback news: Giants head coach Joe Judge said No. 1 quarterback Daniel Jones will not play Saturday in the team’s preseason opener against the Jets. Former Oakland Raiders QB Mike Glennon will get most of the work for the Giants. ... First-year Jacksonville head coach Urban Meyer declined identify a starter for the team’s preseason opener against Cleveland on Saturday, but said that rookie Trevor Lawrence and incumbent Gardner Minshew both will play in the game.
Medical report: Jets rookie wide receiver Elijah Moore, a second-round pick, left practice because of a quadriceps injury and was expected to have an MRI exam. ... Rookie offensive tackle Christian Darrisaw, a first-round pick who is expected to start for Minnesota this season, had core-muscle surgery Wednesday. The team has not ruled him out for its Sept. 12 regular-season opener.
