Vision problems may end career for Yankees outfielder pulled from rehab assigmment.

-

Yankees outfielder Clint Frazier, pulled from a minorleague rehab assignment Monday amid continuing issues with his vision, may not be able to play again, manager Aaron Boone said.

Frazier, 26, began the rehab assignment last Tuesday after missing nearly six weeks due to dizziness and other symptoms consistent with vertigo. He went 4-for-10 over three games, but Boone said Frazier felt unwell prior to Sunday’s game with Double-A Somerset and took himself out of the lineup.

“We’ll see,” Boone said when asked if Frazier would play again. “Obviously he’s been through a lot and been through a lot of seeing a lot of people and a lot of testing and everything. We’ll just try and continue to follow and support him where we can. But as of right now, a little holding pattern. I know he feels well today, so we’ll just see.”

Frazier was placed on the injured list July 1 with what was initially called vertigo and later defined as a possible vision issue. He missed nearly all of the 2018 season with lingering concussion symptoms, but it’s not clear if his current concerns are related.

Lawsuit settled:

The Astros have agreed to a settlement with the family of a 2-year-old girl struck by a foul ball during a 2019 game at Houston’s Minute Maid Park, the family’s attorney said.

Attorney Richard Mithoff said the settlement terms with parents Jonathan David Scott and Alexandra Colchado were confidential. The Astros had no comment, according to a team spokesman.

The girl, who is now 4, suffered a skull fracture and brain injury and has been on antiseizure medication since the incident, Mithoff said. However, her doctors have been weaning her from the medication gradually, and she hasn’t had a seizure in 22 months, he said.

The girl’s injury was among the foul ball incidents that prompted all Major League Baseball teams to extend protective netting farther down the foul lines to protect fans.

Arrieta signs: The Padres, who have starting pitchers Yu Darvish, Chris Paddack, Dinelson Lamet and Adrian Morejon on the injured list, signed recently-released right-hander Jake Arrieta.

Arrieta, the 2015 NL Cy Young Award winner with the Cubs, struggled this season with Chicago. After posting a 2.57 ERA through five starts in 2021, he allowed 58 runs in 581⁄3 innings over his next 15 outings, leaving him with a 6.88 ERA.

Arrieta is scheduled to start Wednesday against Colorado.

“Right now, we need quality innings, we need pitches, we need an opportunity to win games,” San Diego manager Jayce Tingler said. “With all his experience, everything he’s done, we need some quality innings these last seven weeks, and we think he can be part of that solution.”

Medical report: Left-hander Cole Hamels, a four-time AllStar who signed with the Dodgers on Aug. 4, was placed on the 60-day IL after experiencing shoulder pain during a simulated game. The Dodgers had been hoping that Hamels, who was limited to one game last season with the Braves because of a shoulder injury, would be available to debut with the team next month . ... Cincinnati outfielder Jesse Winker went on the 10-day IL because of a ribcage strain. Also landing on the IL were Kansas City reliever Greg Holland (shoulder impingement) and White Sox outfielder Adam Engel (shoulder inflammation).

Briefly: Tampa Bay signed reliever David Robertson, who pitched for the United States in the Tokyo Olympics. Robertson, 36, who has 137 career saves, missed the 2020 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery . ... Former A’s outfielder Ka’ai Tom was designated for assignment by the Pirates.
