Yankees’ Cole sharp in return from IL

Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole pitched twohit ball into the sixth inning and struck out nine in his return from the COVID-19 injured list, Joey Gallo hit a tworun homer and host New York beat the Los Angeles Angels 2-1 on Monday.

Cole (11-6) went 52⁄3 innings, the only damage against him coming on Justin Upton’s homer in the first. The Yankees’ ace walked just one batter and threw 90 pitches, reaching 100 mph in his first appearance since allowing eight runs to Tampa Bay on July 29.

Gallo hit his 29th homer in the first inning against Jose Suarez (5-6), a drive into the second deck in right field. Royals 7, Astros 6: Salvador Perez drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out single in the eighth inning as host Kansas City beat Houston, whose AL West lead over the second-place A’s remained 21⁄2 games.

Dodgers 2, Pirates 1: Max Muncy homered to snap an eighth-inning tie as host Los Angeles beat Pittsburgh. Rockies 6, Padres 5: C.J. Cron hit a solo homer in the ninth inning to lift host Colorado past San Diego. The Padres, who have lost five of six, had tied it in the top of the ninth on Trent Grisham’s two-out, three-run homer.

Braves 12, Marlins 2: Freddie Freeman and Adam Duvall homered during a seven-run fourth inning as visiting Atlanta won for the 11th time in 13 games. Miami had won four in a row.

Rays 9, Orioles 2: Brett Phillips had an inside-the-park homer, Brandon Lowe went deep twice and the AL Eastleadin­g Tampa Bay handed visiting Baltimore its 12th consecutiv­e loss.

Reds 14, Cubs 5: Jonathan India homered and drove in five runs and Joey Votto recorded his 2,000th hit as host Cincinnati handed Chicago its 12th consecutiv­e loss.

Twins 5, Indians 4: Jorge Polanco doubled home Max Kepler with two outs in the 10th inning to give Minnesota its second consecutiv­e walkoff win.
