Frederick Mahan

-

Frederick Mahan passed away peacefully on August 13th, 2021. He was surrounded by family including his son, his brother and his niece. Fred was 90 years old.

Frederick is survived by his daughter Maureen Grainger, son Mark Mahan, brother Reverend Richard G. Mahan, son-in-law Kevin Grainger, two grandchildren Grant and Caroline Grainger and nieces and nephews Richard Mahan, Marcia Harris, Kristi Mahan and Brent Mahan.

Fred was born in Charleston, WV. He was the second of three sons born to immigrant parents, Albert and Angia Mahan. The happiest memories that he would share were the times in winter when the whole family would gather in their father’s grocery store after a long day to eat a home cooked Lebanese meal and selling newspapers on the street with his close friends and rivals. Fred attended Staunton Military Academy, Gettysburg College (Drum Major and Steward of the kitchen) and the University of Michigan Law School. He spent two years serving in the Air Force.

Fred married Martha Burch in January 1961. They had three children Maureen, Stephanie and Mark.

Some events that shaped and molded his young family were Church, Jiddee, Lake Tahoe in summer and winter, Mt. Hermon, family trips to Charleston, Christmas gathering with white Christmas trees, beagles and springer spaniels, Bible studies, reading at the dinner table, and of course, trips to the Rose Bowl when U of M was playing.

Fred had a passion for travel. He traveled with his lovely wife Martha; his video camera in tow. One of their first trips was to Madrid, no video, but the details were perfect.

Fred enjoyed the Opera and the Symphony. He loved Jazz - especially the old Preservation Hall Jazz Band. He was a good cook and plating food was his specialty. Fred was an impeccable dresser - Gene Hiller was his store. He read philosophy books and books by the renowned Christian writers. He was a tremendous supporter of higher education.

An avid writer, he wrote and ipublished a book, called “Has America Lost Its Way? How to Survive The Decline of America”. In simple words, Fred explains our responsibility to ensure this does not happen.

Frederick will be greatly missed. This last year and a half was so isolating and confining for him. He yearned to listen to sermons on his iPhone. He heard the gospel in these moments where Jesus was beckoning him to walk with Him and talk with Him. This is the true meaning of life. We love you Fred, Dad, Brother and Uncle.

Family and friends are invited to attend the Graveside Service Friday, August 20th, 2021, 12:00 PM at Skylawn Memorial Hwy 92 and Skyline Blvd, San Mateo. Gathering to follow at Family Residence 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers or donations, you are invited to share your favorite memories of Fred with the family.
