QB Lance will miss a week — injury in throwing hand

- By Eric Branch

Rookie quarterback Trey Lance suffered a “small chip” of a bone in one of the fingers on his throwing hand in Sunday’s preseason win over the Raiders and will be sidelined for about a week, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday.

Lance, the No. 3 pick, appeared to grab at his right index finger multiple times after linebacker Max Richardson hit him as he threw an incomplete pass with 11 seconds left in the second quarter. The 49ers will practice only on Wednesday and Thursday this week, and Shanahan was hopeful Lance would be back when they return to practice next Monday, six days before their

season opener at Detroit. Shanahan indicated he wasn’t concerned about the injury impacting Lance’s preparation for Week 1.

“He can’t take snaps and do all that stuff right now,” Shanahan said. “He just has to rest it for seven days, they say. That should make it heal and, hopefully, he’ll be good next Monday when we get into practice.”

Lance remained in the game after his injury and exited after leading the 49ers’ first possession of the third quarter. Lance didn’t complete any of his three passes after the injury. He had completed 6 of his first 10 passes.

“I don’t really honestly even remember what play it happened on,” Lance said Sunday, “but I think I jammed it like on a helmet or something. But I’m not worried about it. See how it feels tomorrow, for sure.”

Shanahan was asked whether Lance had injured his thumb.

“Not going to get into which finger it is,” Shanahan said. “One of his five.”

In other injury news, wide receiver Travis Benjamin remains in the concussion protocol. Offensive tackle Shon Coleman, who is on the roster bubble, suffered a strained triceps and will “be out a while,” Shanahan said.
