Sources say Big 12 moving to add four

The Big 12 is moving on an expansion plan that could have the conference at 12 schools after Texas and Oklahoma leave, with BYU, Central Florida, Cincinnati and Houston the “most intriguing” candidates.

Three people familiar with the Big 12’s talks said Friday the eight schools being left behind by the Longhorns and Sooners are working to rebuild by adding four members.

Two people said there were meetings planned for Big 12 presidents and athletic directors to discuss next steps.

One person said invitations could go out next week.

In July, the SEC invited

Texas and Oklahoma to join that powerhouse league, a move that rocked college sports and put the Big 12’s future in doubt.

FRIDAY’S RESULTS No. 10 UNC falls to Virginia Tech

Braxton Burmeister ran for a touchdown and threw for another and host Virginia Tech made quarterback Sam Howell look pedestrian in a 17-10 victory over No. 10 North Carolina in both teams’ opener.

Burmeister scored on a 4-yard run and found James Mitchell for an 11-yard scoring strike as the Hokies took a 14-0 lead into halftime.

Howell, who had thrown eight touchdown passes in two games against Virginia Tech, was sacked six times and threw three interceptions, the last when he threw wildly while in the grasp of Jordan Williams.

Other scores: Host Colorado rushed for 236 yards and four touchdowns in beating Northern Colorado 35-7 . ... Chris Reynolds threw for 324 yards with three TDs, including an 11-yard strike to Shadrick Byrd with 33 seconds left, and host Charlotte knocked off Duke 31-28 for the school’s first win over a Power 5 team . ... Christian Beal-Smith ran for two TDs while Ja’Sir Taylor scored on a 99-yard kickoff return to help host Wake Forest beat Old Dominion 42-10 in a season opener for both teams . ... Jason Bean hit Lawrence Arnold for their second TD with 1:12 left, letting host Kansas escape with a 17-14 victory over South Dakota in coach Lance Leipold’s Jayhawks debut.
