Red Sox get two players back from COVID-19 IL

The Red Sox, who had 11 players on the COVID-19 injured list as of Sunday, got some good news on the virus front Tuesday as utilitymen Kiké Hernandez and Danny Santana returned to Boston’s active roster.

Hernandez, who had been out since testing positive for the coronaviru­s Aug. 27, has started games at second base, shortstop and center field this season. With 17 home runs and 51 RBIs, the leadoff hitter is approachin­g his career highs of 21 homers and 52 RBIs.

Santana went on the COVID-19 IL on Sunday after reporting that he felt sick. Manager Alex Cora told reporters that Santana did not test positive for the virus.

The return of Hernandez and Santana, along with that of reliever Josh Taylor on Monday, left eight Boston players on the COVID list. That group includes two All-Stars — shortstop Xander Bogaerts and closer Matt Barnes — and starting pitcher Nick Pivetta.

Pivetta, who is fully vaccinated, tested positive for the coronaviru­s Sunday. The seven other players on the COVID list tested positive for the coronaviru­s earlier.

According to Cora, former Giants infielder Christian Arroyo — who tested positive for the virus Aug. 28 — has had the most severe COVID symptoms among the sidelined players, the Boston Globe reported.

Medical report: Arizona reliever Tyler Clippard and Detroit reliever Joe Jimenez were placed on the COVID-19 IL. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Clippard had COVIDlike symptoms, but did not say whether he had been tested for the coronaviru­s. The Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw, who has been sidelined for two months because of shoulder inflammati­on, allowed two runs on four hits in three innings for Triple-A Oklahoma City in a rehab start against Albuquerqu­e. The list of players beginning rehab stints also includes White Sox outfielder Adam Engel, Toronto pitcher Ross Stripling, Cleveland catcher Roberto Perez and catcher Andrew Knapp and outfielder Matt Joyce of Philadelph­ia . ... Seattle center fielder Kyle Lewis, the 2020 AL Rookie of the Year who has not played since May 31 because of a knee injury, won’t return this season, the Seattle Times reported. Lewis recently suffered a bone bruise in his injured knee, the newspaper reported.

Court TV: The New York Court of Appeals has agreed to hear the long-running dispute between the Orioles and Nationals over TV-rights fees.

The court, the highest in the state, on Thursday granted the the Orioles’ motion for permission to appeal.

MASN was establishe­d in March 2005 after the Montreal Expos relocated to Washington and became the Nationals, moving into what had been Baltimore’s exclusive broadcast territory since 1972. The Orioles have a controllin­g interest in the network.

MASN paid the Nationals for 2012-16 what the Orioles proposed: $197.5 million. Washington argued it should have been paid $475 million.

Briefly: Former A’s pitcher Ross Detwiler was designated for assignment by Miami, which recalled Olympic speedskate­r/infielder Eddy Alvarez from Triple-A Jacksonvil­le . ... Infielder Taylor Motter was designated for assignment by the Red Sox.
