Angelo F. Demattei

Angelo Demattei, also known to his friends as “Ang” and affectiona­tely to his family as “Freddie”, had just celebrated his 95th birthday with family when his health rapidly declined until his passing on Halloween. He was born in San Francisco to Giuseppe and Giovanna Demattei. He is survived by his two younger sisters, Lillian Balliet and Diane De Matei (Ed De Matei); nieces and nephews, Lauren Leonarduzz­i (Gianni), Lydia Habenicht (Jim), Sean Balliet, Liz Knight (Kerry), Ed De Matei (Lanette), and Joe De Matei (Andrew); grand nieces and nephews, Kristian Habenicht (Melinda), Ian Habenicht, Marisa Leonarduzz­i, Brady Knight, Parker Knight, Tony De Matei (Lyndsay), Renee Trojan (Louis), Rachel De Matei, and Lia De Matei; and a great grandniece, Madison De Matei; as well as cousins in the Bay Area and Italy.

Freddie was graduated from the University of California, Berkeley as a Civil Engineer and spent his career working for Guy F. Atkinson Company which took him to Pakistan to work on the Mangla Dam and San Luis Obispo to work on the Diablo Canyon Power Plant, among other projects. He served in the Merchant Marines as the Radio Officer on a Liberty ship during WWII. He later served during the Korean War in the U.S. Army mapping the Philippine Islands which included the area of the Bataan Death March. He retired 34 years ago in Belmont, California and spent his time playing tennis, snow skiing, traveling, wood working, acting as a docent on the SS Jeremiah O’Brien, and was an avid fan of local sports teams.

He loved the sea, and his remains will be returned to the place he cherished the most. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, December 4th at 11:30 am at St. Matthew Catholic Church, One Notre Dame Ave., San Mateo CA Reception to follow.
