Stanford women fall to No. 7 after Texas loss

Stanford on Monday dropped to from third to seventh in the Associated Press Top 25 women’s poll after the defending national champs lost to No. 25 Texas on Sunday.

The Cardinal (1-1) beat Morgan State in their home opener.

South Carolina remained the top team in the poll, receiving 25 first-place votes from a national media panel. The Gamecocks were followed by UConn, which received the other five No. 1 votes, and Maryland.

For the men, Gonzaga, UCLA and Kansas held the top three spots in the Press’ first Top 25 rankings of the regular season while Michigan climbed two spots to No. 4.

The Bulldogs received 55 first-place votes from a 61person media panel in the poll released Monday after a win over Texas. The No. 2 Bruins had six first-place votes after beating Villanova and the Jayhawks were third following a win over Michigan State.

Men

#1 Gonzaga 84, Alcorn State

57: Julian Strawther scored 18 points in the Bulldogs’ (3-0) dominating win over the Braves (0-4), extending the nation’s longest home winning streak to 54 games.

Freshman Hunter Sallis added 16 points for Gonzaga, which shot 59% to Alcorn State’s 40%.

#2 UCLA 100, Long Beach

State 79: Johnny Juzang scored 25 points and Jules Bernard added 22 as the Bruins (3-0) pulled away at home to beat the Beach (1-1) after a close first half.

#9 Baylor 89, Nicholls State 60: LJ Cryer had a career-high 20 points to lead five players scoring in double figures for the Bears (2-0), as the defending national champions overwhelme­d the visiting Colonels (3-1).

Marquette 67, #10 Illinois 66: Tyler Kolek converted a steal into a go-ahead layup with 18 seconds left and the Golden Eagles (3-0) forced 26 turnovers for a comeback victory over the visiting Illini (2-1).

#19 Ohio State, 89, Bowling Green 58: Five players scored in double figures for the host Buckeyes (3-0), who routed the Falcons (1-2).

Tulsa 64, Oregon State 58: Jeriah Horne had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and the Golden Hurricane (2-1) scored the last four points at home to beat the Beavers (1-2).

Washington 72, Texas Southern 65: Terrell Brown Jr. had 20 points and nine assists, Daejon Davis added 15 points and the host Huskies (2-1) beat the Tigers (0-3).

Colorado 90, Maine 46: Sophomore Keeshawn Barthelemy scored a career-high 22 points on 9-for-12 shooting from the floor and the Buffaloes (3-0) breezed past the visiting Black Bears (1-2).

Arizona State 72, North Florida 63:

DJ Horne made four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points, and the host Sun Devils (2-1) closed with a 12-5 surge to beat the Ospreys (0-4).

Utah 86, Bethune-Cookman 55: David Jenkins Jr. scored 25 points, Brandon Carlson added 14 points and the host Utes (3-0) routed the Wildcats (0-3).

Washington State 73, UC

Santa Barbara 65: The Cougars (3-0) had four players score in double figures in a home win over the Gauchos (1-1),

Women

#5 N.C. State 100, Towson 52:

Diamond Johnson scored 16 points and had six rebounds for the host Wolfpack (3-1), which led wire-to-wire in a commanding victory over the Tigers (3-1).

Four other Wolfpack players scored in double digits: Elissa Cunane with 15 points, Raina Perez with 13 points, Jakia Brown-Turner with 11 and Camille Hobby with 12.

#6 Baylor 78, New Orleans

39: Queen Egbo scored 22 points on 11-for-12 shooting and had 11 rebounds as the host Bears improved to 3-0 under new head coach Nicki Collen with a victory over the Privateers (0-2).

#11 Arizona 93, Texas Southern 38: Cate Reese had 15 points and 11 rebounds and the Wildcats (3-0) cruised past the visiting Tigers (0-2).

#14 Iowa State 75, South Dakota State 56: Lexi Donarski scored 22 points and Aubrey Joens added 17 as the host Cyclones (2-0) beat the Jackrabbit­s (1-2).

#16 Tennessee 52, #23 South Florida 49: Jordan Horston scored 18 of her 24 points in the second half, Tamari Key had 10 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks, and the host Lady Volunteers (3-0) beat the Bulls (2-1).

#24 Texas A&M 95, DePaul 75: Jordan Nixon scored 17 of her 25 points in the second quarter, Kayla Wells added 21 points and the Aggies (3-0) beat the visiting Blue Demons (2-1).
