Walter Kiner

The 5th of 7 children born to Frank William and Frances Rose Kiner in Madison, SD. Called “The Aristocrat” by his siblings because he was the only one born in the hospital. Walt got his 1st job at the age of 5 setting pins in a bowling alley. His father was a peace officer, so the family lived in the Madison Courthouse. The family moved to San Francisco in 1939. Walt attended St. Dominic’s Grammar School and Polytechni­c High School. He dropped out after his sophomore year so he could go to work to help support his mother and younger siblings. In 1951, he was drafted and entered the US Army. After basic training at Fort Ord, he was deployed to Korea. On Feb.7, 1952 while serving as a forward observer, Walt was wounded by shrapnel. After being discharged, he worked as a variety store manager. Met and married Mary Breslin on Oct.2, 1954. Owned and operated Kiner’s 5 and 10. He later bought Washington Toy Company in 1965. Retired in 2000. Walt was the president of the St. Cecilia chapter of the St.Vincent De Paul Society. He also served as a St.Cecilia Knight. Past Regional Deputy Director of Al Andolus Caravan 102 of the Order of Alhambra. Preceded in death by his parents and siblings

Margaret(Blake), John, Frank. Barbara(Benson), Jeanette (Piddock) and William. Son Richard, daughter-in-law Kari(Kiner), survived by his wife of 67 years Mary, sons Daniel and Gregory, daughter-inlaw Regina(Kiner), stepgrandd­aughter Reeze and granddaugh­ter Ryanne.

Family and friends are welcomed for a Visitation 6pm at St. Cecilia Church on Tue. Nov. 16, 2021 with a Rosary at 7pm. Funeral Mass on Wed. Nov. 17, 2021 at 10:30a followed by burial at Holy Cross.
