Top Duke freshman starts after being cited

Paolo Banchero started for Duke two days after being cited for aiding and abetting impaired driving, finishing with 10 points and eight rebounds in the No. 7 Blue Devils’ 92-52 win over visiting Gardner-Webb on Tuesday night.

Banchero, a freshman who was picked as the ACCPreseas­on Player of the Year, was stopped by police early Sunday morning in nearby Hillsborou­gh along with teammate Michael Savarino, coach Mike Krzyzewski’s grandson.

Savarino was driving Banchero’s white Jeep, according to court records, and was arrested and charged with driving while impaired. Banchero, who was in the back seat, was cited at the scene and released.

“We had a violation of our standards and we’ll handle that internally. We’re already handling it,” Krzyzewski said.

Savarino did not play against Gardner-Webb (0-3), while Banchero played 26 minutes.

Trevor Keels led Duke (4-0) with 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Sophomore center Mark Williams had a career-high six blocks along with 13 points.

Lance Terry scored 15 points to lead Gardner-Webb.

Seton Hall 67, #4 Michigan 65: Jared Rhoden scored 16 points, helping the visiting Pirates (3-0) rally from 11 points down early in the second half. The Wolverines (2-1) had a chance to extend the game with 0.8 seconds left, but Terrance Williams missed the first of two free throws. Earlier in the day, Michigan signed coach Juwan Howard to a five-year contract extension through 2025-26.

#5 Villanova 100, Howard 81: Brandon Slater scored 23 points for the host Wildcats (2-1). The Bison (3-1) got 19 points from Kyle Foster.

#6 Purdue 96, Wright State 52: In West Lafayette, Ind., Trevion Williams had 20 points and 13 rebounds and Zach Edey added 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Boilermake­rs (3-0). Wright State (1-2) was led by Trey Calvin with 21 points.

#11 Memphis 90, Saint Louis 74: Tyler Harris had 18 points and Emoni Bates scored 16 for the host Tigers (3-0). Jalen Duren added 13 points. Terrence Hargrove Jr. led St. Louis (3-1) with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

BYU 81, #12 Oregon 49: In Portland, Ore., Alex Barcello scored a seasonhigh 25 points, including four 3-pointers, and the Cougars (3-0) thumped the Ducks in the Phil Knight Invitation­al. Eric Williams Jr.’s 12 points led led Oregon (2-1), which shot 32% from the floor and made 3 of 14 3-point attempts.

#13 Kentucky 80, Mount St. Mary’s 55: Oscar Tshiebwe had a career-high 24 points with 16 rebounds for the host Wildcats (2-1). Mount St. Mary’s (1-3) shot 34%.

#14 Alabama 73, South Alabama 68: Jahvon Quinerly made a go-ahead layup with under three minutes to go and the host Crimson Tide (3-0) got past the Jaguars. Charles Manning Jr., who had 23 points for South Alabama (1-2), hit a 3 that made it 62-all with 3:09 remaining.

#15 Houston 67, Virginia 47: Marcus Sasser scored 19 points, Kyler Edwards added 18 and the host Cougars (3-0) shut down the Cavaliers. Houston forced Virginia (1-2) into 17 turnovers. The Cavaliers shot just 35%.

#18 North Carolina 94, Charleston 83: Armando Bacot scored a careerhigh 24 points, tied his career best with six blocks and had 12 rebounds for the visiting Tar Heels (3-0).

#25 USC 78, Florida Gulf Coast 61: Chevez Goodwin scored 20 points and the Trojans (3-0) defeated Florida Gulf Coast in the return of former Trojans coach Andy Enfield to the school he led to the “Dunk City” moniker in the 2013 NCAA tournament. Cyrus Largie scored 20 points for FGCU (1-2).

Santa Clara 96, Nevada 74: Parker Braun’s 19 points led the host Broncos to a 3-0 start. The Wolf Pack (1-2) got 23 points from Grant Sherfield.
