Williams has 26, Santa Clara rips Cal Poly

Junior guard Jalen Williams poured in a career-high 26 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds as Santa Clara improved to 4-0 with an 87-57 rout of Cal Poly at the Leavey Center on Friday night.

Williams went 10-for-16 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the foul line.

The Broncos also got double-figure scoring from PJ Pipes (15), Keshawn Justice (12) and Carlos Stewart (11). Santa Clara never trailed.

Kyle Colvin led the Mustangs (1-3) with 18 points, 16 of which came in the first half. Alimamy Koroma was the only other Cal Poly player to score in the opening 20 minutes. The Broncos led 34-21 at the break.

The Bay Area’s WCC men’s teams are a combined 13-0; USF is 5-0 and St. Mary’s is 4-0.

Arizona 82, Wichita State 78: Christian Koloko’s layup with 4:43 left gave the host Wildcats (4-0) the lead for good and Justin Kier made four three throws in the final 26 seconds to survive the Shickers (3-1). Bendecit Mathurin had 25 points and 10 rebounds for Arizona.

Southern Illinois 67, Colorado 63: In the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, Steven Verplancke­n Jr. scored 18 points and Marcus Domask scored 17 as the Salukis (2-1) edged the Buffaloes (3-1).

#1 Gonzaga 92, Bellarmine 50: Drew Timme scored 25 points as the Zags (4-0) extended the nation’s longest home winning streak to 55 games. Julian Strawther added 19 points for Gonzaga, which has not lost at home since 2018. Freshman center Chet Holmgren had 18 points on 8-for-10 shooting, plus five rebounds and five assists. Dylan Penn scored 14 points for the Knights (0-4), who lost 73-64 at St. Mary’s on Wednesday night.

#7 Duke 88, Lafayette 55: Wendell Moore Jr. scored 23 points and the host Blue Devils (5-0) cruised over the Leopards (0-3).

#11 Memphis 74, Western Kentucky 62: Jalen Duren had 22 points, 19 rebounds and five blocks as the host Tigers (4-0) knocked off the Hilltopper­s (1-3).

#13 Kentucky 77, Ohio 59: Keion Brooks scored 22 points and freshman guard TyTy Washington had a career-high 20 points and 11 rebounds for the host Wildcats (3-1), who trailed for most of the first half.

#14 Alabama 86, Oakland 59: Jaden Shackelfor­d scored 20 points as the Crimson Tide (4-0) routed the Grizzlies (2-2).

#20 Maryland 69, Hofstra 67: Ian Martinez made two free throws with 4.2 seconds remaining for the host Terrapins (4-1), who scored the game’s final six points after a 3-pointer by Jalen Ray (18 points) put the Pride (1-3) up 67-63.

#21 Auburn 58, South Florida 52: K.D. Johnson scored 15 points and Zep Jasper added 13 for the visiting Tigers (3-0).

#22 St. Bonaventur­e 68, Clemson 65: Kyle Lofton scored 22 points, Jaren Holmes added 19 and the Bonnies (4-0) rallied from a 16-point deficit to beat the Tigers (4-1) in the semifinals of the Charleston Classic in South Carolina.

WOMEN

#5 N.C. State 90, Kansas St. 69: Elissa Cunane had 18 points and six rebounds for the host Wolfpack (4-1). Ayoka Lee, the nation’s second-leading scorer, finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats (4-1).

#11 Arizona 78, Marist 36: In Tucson, Sam Thomas scored 14 points and the Wildcats (4-0) overwhelme­d the Red Foxes (2-2).

#22 West Virginia 78, Kennesaw State 58:

Jasmine Carson came off the bench to score 14 points — including four 3-pointers — and Esmery Martinez posted her 16th career double-double for the host Mountainee­rs (2-0).

#8 Iowa cancels games: The Hawkeyes canceled a game against Drake on Sunday and won’t travel to the Cancun Challenge tournament because of positive COVID-19 tests in the program, the school said Friday night.
