Meyer not headed to Notre Dame
Urban Meyer says he will not be Notre Dame’s next head coach.
The coach of the 2-9 Jacksonville Jaguars flatly squashed any speculation about his immediate future when asked by the Associated Press on Tuesday about the vacancy at Notre Dame created by Brian Kelly’s abrupt departure for LSU.
“I’m not a candidate,” Meyer said on a conference call with the beat writers for the Los Angeles Rams, Jacksonville’s opponent on Sunday. “Obviously I spent six years of my life there, so great respect for Notre Dame, and as I do USC, UCLA, like we talked about (earlier in the call). But I’m committed to the Jaguars and doing the best we can to turn this thing around.”
Meyer won two national championships with Florida and one with Ohio State before stepping down from the Buckeyes following the 2018 season.
Meyer shot down speculation about leaving the NFL for USC after the Trojans fired coach Clay Helton in September — they hired Lincoln Riley away from Oklahoma on Monday — and his name was immediately linked to Notre Dame on Monday after Kelly bolted for LSU.
Meyer spent six years (19962000) as receivers coach in South Bend, Ind.
Browns lose Conklin: Cleveland Browns All-Pro right tackle Jack Conklin’s season is over: The team placed him on injured reserve for a second time, two days after he suffered a torn patellar knee tendon in a loss to Baltimore.
The Browns (6-6) signed Conklin to a three-year, $42 million free-agent deal before last season. He spent his first four NFL seasons with the Tennessee Titans.
Briefly: Cowboys rookie cornerback Nahshon Wright has tested positive for COVID-19, bringing to eight the number of players and coaches sidelined by the coronavirus for Thursday’s game at New Orleans. Coach Mike McCarthy and five members of his staff won’t make the trip because of positive tests. Wright and right tackle Terence Steele are the two players out . ... Giants quarterback Daniel Jones reportedly has a neck injury, and his status for Sunday’s game against the Dolphins is uncertain. New York activated defensive back Logan Ryan off the reserve/COVID-19 list and placed cornerback Darnay Holmes on the injured list with a rib injury . ... The Titans added rookie linebacker Monty Rice to an injured reserve list now at 18 with the team at its bye. Rice hurt his right ankle in last week’s 36-13 loss to the Patriots . ... One day after the Panthers announced that running back Christian McCaffrey will miss the remainder of the season with an ankle injury, Carolina lost starting cornerback Donte Jackson to a groin injury. Jackson was injured in Carolina’s 33-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
