With late basket, Spurs cool off Jazz

Lonnie Walker IV banked in a jumper with 14.9 seconds left to lift the San Antonio Spurs to a 128-126 victory over the host Utah Jazz on Friday night.

Keldon Johnson scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead San Antonio. Derrick White added 22 points and Walker chipped in 19. The Spurs snapped Utah’s eightgame winning streak.

Donovan Mitchell scored 27 points for the Jazz. Jordan Clarkson added 21 points and Mike Conley had 18. Rudy Gobert added 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Mitchell scored back-to-back baskets to give the Jazz a 126-125 lead with 33 seconds left. Walker answered with the go-ahead jumper.

Mitchell had two cracks at a go-ahead basket in the final seconds but missed both shots.

Utah’s efficient shooting kept San Antonio from building much of a lead. The Jazz shot 26-for-46 from the field in the first half and made eight 3pointers.

Utah never trailed in the second quarter after Conley and Clarkson scored back-to-back baskets to break a 39-39 tie. The Jazz eventually built a 17-point lead before halftime, going up 73-56 on Mitchell’s secondchan­ce 3-pointer that capped a 10-1 run.

Timberwolv­es 110, Lakers 92: Karl-Anthony Towns contribute­d 28 points, 10 rebounds and four assists to lead host Minnesota.

Nuggets 133, Hawks 115: Bones Hyland scored 24 points, Monte Morris added 21 and visiting Denver beat Atlanta. Nikola Jokic and Jeff Green each finished with 20 points for the Nuggets, who had 17 3-pointers.

Pelicans 116, Bucks 112: Devonte’ Graham hit eight 3-pointers and added two clutch free throws late in overtime to finish with 26 points, and host New Orleans outlasted Milwaukee.

Heat 115, Magic 105: Max Strus scored 23 of his career-best 32 points in the first half, Gabe Vincent added a career-best 27 and visiting Miami beat Orlando.

Trail Blazers 125, Hornets 116: Damian Lillard poured in 43 points as host Portland defeated Charlotte.

Grizzlies 124, Kings 105: Desmond Bane scored 24 points, Dillon Brooks had 23 and visiting Memphis beat Sacramento.

Coronaviru­s updates: The list of players entering health and safety protocols included Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards and Taurean Prince, Sacramento’s Alex Len and Louis King, Boston’s Al Horford, Juancho Hernangome­z and Grant Williams, New York’s Immanuel Quickley and the Lakers’ Kendrick Nunn.

⏩ Chicago, whose virus outbreak led to two games being canceled this week, saw its health and safety protocols roster shrink from its high of 10 to seven with DeMar DeRozan being cleared to return. Earlier, the Bulls’ Coby White and Javonte Green were removed from the list.

⏩ Lakers guard Russell Westbrook, who went into health and safety protocols Thursday, exited the list Friday.

Briefly: Detroit forward Jerami Grant had surgery for a ligament injury in his right thumb and will be evaluated in six weeks . ... Denver guard Markus Howard is expected to be sidelined for at least six weeks because of a knee injury.
