Cal has water polo’s top player, coach

Cal was well represente­d in men’s water polo honors, with Player of the Year and threetime All-America selection Nikolaos Papanikola­ou and head coach Kirk Everist.

Joining Papanikola­ou on the first team were Cal teammates Evan Rosenfeld and Jack Deely. Cal’s Max Casabella, Roberto Valera and goalkeeper Adrian Weinberg made the second team, as did Stanford’s Tyler Abramson.

Everist won his third Coach of the Year award and the eighth in the history of the Bears’ program.

The All-America teams are based on nomination­s and voting by varsity head coaches.

Courts: The Michigan Court of Appeals overturned a former Michigan State University gymnastics coach’s conviction for lying to investigat­ors about her knowledge of the Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal.

Kathie Klages was sentenced to 90 days in jail in 2020 on felony and misdemeano­r counts of lying to police about her knowledge of the former Olympic and MSU doctor’s sexual abuse. She maintained that she could not remember a conversati­on in 1997 with girls who had reported abuse by Nassar.

Skiing: In Courchevel, France, Mikaela Shiffrin dominated the first of two midweek women’s World Cup giant slaloms. Building on a big lead from the first run, the Olympic champion finished on the Emile Allais course 0.86 of a second ahead of Sara Hector of Sweden. World champion Lara Gut-Behrami, slalom World Cup winner Katharina Liensberge­r and Alice Robinson skipped the race after testing positive for the coronaviru­s. Obituary: Kimera Bartee, a former major-league outfielder and Detroit Tigers first base coach, died at age 49. Bartee was an outfielder in Detroit from 1996 to 1999 and played with the Cincinnati Reds and Colorado Rockies.
