Oakley had tremendous curiosity and a great zest for life. He was a voracious reader and loved traveling the world and exploring new places. He attended theater, opera and symphony, visited museums listened to jazz, and participated in, and in later years watched sports, particularly tennis, hockey and bicycling. He was also a generous supporter of the arts.

He attended Princeton Country Day School, Lawrenceville and Yale (where he was a member of the Glee Club, Delta Kappa Epsilon and Book and Snake). After attending architecture school at Yale, Oakley served in the United States Marine Corp at Parris Island and Camp Lejeune. The following two years were spent in Denver and Cheyenne, where he decided to enter medical school at University of Colorado School of Medicine. After graduation, an internship at the Public Health Service in San Francisco and an orthopedic surgery residency at UCSF, Oakley went into practice for a year in Concord, Massachusetts. He then returned to California
