Apr 26, 1927-Dec 08, 2021

Carl was the 4th of 6 children, born to Robert and Gertrude Snider. He was raised in Riverside CA. He graduated from Riverside Polytechnic High and immediately enlisted in the Merchant Marine as radio operator and began a long career with the Merchant Marine. His first ship was the SS Pan American Victory; he went on to serve on at least fifty different ships. He sent hundreds, if not thousands, of postcards and many gifts to the family from all over the world. In retirement he enjoyed HAM radio conversations with people from all over the world. He also often enjoyed a glass of wine with friends at his favorite pub, Fiorino’s in Santa Rosa. Socially shy, sometimes difficult to get to know, he was honest and intelligent and an excellent conversationalist who could offer wise advice. He died in his sleep at his home in Santa Rosa, CA at the age of ninety-four. As a previous long-time resident of San Francisco, the city where he was the happiest, it was his desire to have his ashes spread near the Golden Gate Bridge. Carl is now reunited with his wife Sadako Hatahara, formerly of Japan, his parents, Robert Griffee Snider and Gertrude May Wagner Snider, formerly of Riverside, CA, siblings Marjorie Mapes formerly of Longview, WA, Muriel Cordier, formerly of Benicia, CA, Robert Gene Snider formerly of AK and Elberton, WA, Eldora Xanthis, formerly of Riverside, CA, and George “Ralph” Snider, formerly of Joshua Tree, CA; all are gone now but not forgotten. Nieces, nephews and friends survive him. Special thanks to Carl’s caretaker, Maria Carreon, whose patience, and dedication allowed Carl to remain at home. No service is planned at this time, but family and friends are encouraged to donate to a favorite charity, to say a prayer for Carl and appreciate the freedoms that he and other veterans have helped preserve.
