Fouad Malouf passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on February 6, 2022 at his home in Hillsborough, CA surrounded by his cherished family and loved ones. Fouad is survived by his wife, Mimi, children Philip (Colleen), Steve, grandchildren Kathleen and Kevin, sister Antoinette Malouf and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his sister Lily Malouf, brothers William and Antoine Malouf.

Fouad was born on August 23, 1929 to his parents Wadih and Satout Malouf, one of 5 children. He was raised in Lebanon and immigrated to the United States in 1958 following his older brother Antoine Malouf at the age of 29. He came to the United States to pursue the “American Dream” and soon afterwards received his degree in Business Administration from San Francisco State University. In 1970, he married the love of his life, Mimi. She joined him in San Francisco and they began a 52 year long marriage with nothing but love and adoration for each other. On October 21, 1972, their first son Philip was born, followed shortly afterwards by Steve on November 26, 1973.

Fouad’s boundless energy and entrepreneurial spirit lead him to start his remarkable business journey, owning and operating many businesses throughout San Francisco, including cafes, local markets and also Schroeder’s Restaurant which is still a San Franciscan institution. Fouad would eventually try his hand at real estate where he found great success acquiring and developing real estate throughout the Bay Area. This eventually afforded him the opportunity to concentrate on his philanthropic endeavors.

In 1989 Fouad founded the Lebanese American Association (LAA), a non-profit organization built on the premise of providing a community for local Lebanese Americans. Through the LAA, the Lebanese community was given the opportunity to celebrate their culture and traditions as well as offer educational scholarships and send medical supplies to communities in need in Lebanon. He loved America dearly, always sharing how it was the best place in the world to live, raise a family, and enjoy the gifts of living in a country where everyone has the freedom to pave the life you dreamed of. He was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2010. The Medal is presented annually to those who have shown an outstanding commitment to serving our nation either professionally, culturally or civically. Fouad was very proud of this accomplishment. All the while, he never forgot where he came from and was committed to helping those who weren’t afforded the same opportunities he had throughout his lifetime.

Fouad was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He took great pride in raising his children and enjoying his grandchildren. Nothing made him feel more fulfilled in life than watching his sons and grandchildren achieve happiness and success. He was also very spiritual and active in his local church activities. Fouad had a beautiful voice. He spent 4 years in a Lebanese monastery where he trained in Byzantine chanting. He would often be found chanting at St. Nicholas Church in San Francisco during Sunday mass.

He carried his spirituality throughout his life and was always willing to mentor and give guidance to family and friends. It was second nature for Fouad to help relatives and friends in their pursuit of career, raising a family and/or finding happiness in life. He brought a sense of humility, joy, wisdom and empathy to those he connected with. Fouad always lit up the room with his beautiful smile, positive nature and his contagious laughter. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him. May God rest his beautiful soul.
