Manchester City rallies with 3 goals for EPL title

The prospect of a first-ever changing of the lead on the final day was growing with Aston Villa leading Manchester City 2-0 at the stunned Etihad Stadium as challenger Liverpool chased an eventual 3-1 win over Wolverhamp­ton.

Just like when a comeback was conjured up in 2012 to win its first Premier League title with two stoppage-time goals, City produced another rousing recovery Sunday.

This time it took three goals — all scored in five minutes from the 76th minute — to turn it around against Villa to win 3-2 and successful­ly defend the title by a single point.

“We came back from the dead today and won the game,” captain Fernandinh­o said after his final game for City. “It’s an amazing feeling.”

Jackson Yueill scored one minute into the second half to help the Earthquake­s earn a 1-1 draw with Sporting Kansas City in San Jose. Jamiro Monteiro got an assist on the equalizer for San Jose (3-5-5).

Johnny Russell scored in the 45th minute to give Sporting KC (3-7-4) the lead at halftime.

In other MLS action, Heber Araujo dos Santos scored on a penalty kick in the 28th minute and Sean Johnson made it stand up as host New York City FC defeated the Chicago Fire 1-0 . ... Daniel Rios scored on a tap-in in the 85th minute to send Charlotte FC to a 2-1 home victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps. ... Justen Glad and Sergio Cordova scored in a 12-minute span in the second half, leading Real Salt Lake to a 2-1 win in Montreal . ... Inter Miami CF defeated the visiting New York Red Bulls 2-0 . ... Minnesota United held off FC Dallas 2-1 in Texas.

The city of Milan was swarming with a sea of celebratin­g red-and-black fans as AC Milan secured its first Serie A title in 11 years with a 3-0 win at Sassuolo.

Milan finished two points ahead of defending champion — and city rival — Inter Milan, which won 3-0 at home to Sampdoria.

WNBA: Candace Parker finished with her second career triple-double and the Chicago Sky pulled away in the second half to beat the host Washington Mystics 82-73. Parker totaled 16 points, 13 rebounds and picked up a 10th assist on a basket by Allie Quigley with 21.2 seconds remaining. It was the 11th tripledoub­le in WNBA history. Orinda’s Sabrina Ionescu was the last to record a triple-double, accomplish­ing the feat in May 2021 for the New York Liberty against the Minnesota Lynx . ... Softball: Alana Vawter shut down the Alabama offense as Stanford defeated the No. 6 Crimson Tide 6-0 in the eliminatio­n game of the NCAA’s Tuscaloosa (Ala.) regional. The Cardinal will host Oregon State in a best-of-three super regional, with the winner advancing to the World Series.

College golf: Stanford leads the pack by nine strokes and San Jose State is tied for seventh after three rounds of the women’s NCAA golf championsh­ip in Scottsdale, Ariz. The remaining 15 teams have one more round of stroke play before the top eight compete in match play. The Cardinal’s Rose Zhang leads the individual competitio­n by seven strokes at 9-under after shooting a 3-under 69 in the third round.
