Fedde, bullpen help Nats defeat Dodgers

-

Erik Fedde and three relievers combined on a six-hitter, Cesar Hernandez had an RBI single and the Nationals beat the Dodgers 1-0 in Washington on Wednesday to avoid a series sweep.

Washington snapped a ninegame skid against Los Angeles. The Nationals had not defeated the Dodgers since Game 5 of the NL Division Series in 2019.

“It’s great when you can hand the ball over and watch three more zeroes go up on the board and hold the lead,” said Fedde, who allowed four hits in six innings. “We haven’t had a lot of opportunities to do that this year.“

Tanner Rainey stranded two in the ninth inning for his fourth save in six tries, getting flyballs from Cody Bellinger and Will Smith to end it.

Los Angeles lost for only the second time in 11 games, but the Dodgers still own the best record in the National League at 29-14.

Brewers 2, Padres 1: Rowdy Tellez doubled home the tying run and Tyrone Taylor followed with a sacrifice fly as Milwaukee won in San Diego.

Padres starter Yu Darvish held the Brewers to one hit through six innings, but Milwaukee broke through against him in the seventh with two hits, a walk and a sacrifice fly.

Pirates 10, Rockies 5: Jack Suwinski hit a tying three-run homer in the sixth and Josh VanMeter followed with a three-run homer in the seventh for host Pittsburgh.

Suwinski has five homers, tops among NL rookies.

Reds 4, Cubs 3: Joey Votto homered and former Giants closer Hunter Strickland pitched out of a ninth-inning jam for his first save since 2019.

The game also included a shouting match between Votto and Chicago reliever Rowan Wick after Wick threw a pitch up and in on Votto.

Tigers 4, Twins 2: Jeimer Candelario hit a tie-breaking two-run homer in the 10th inning after Harold Castro went deep twice earlier as visiting Detroit won.

Rays 5, Marlins 4: Harold Ramirez’s two-run homer capped a five-run first for host Tampa Bay, which swept the two-game series from its instate rival.

Yankees 2, Orioles 0: JP Sears pitched five innings and combined with four relievers on a five-hitter as host New York prevailed.
