Curry fills in missing line in resume with Finals MVP
BOSTON — Stephen Curry was crowned NBA Finals MVP after leading the Golden State Warriors to their first championship since 2018 in a six-game series win over the Boston Celtics. It’s the first time the 34-year-old was recognized with the Bill Russell trophy in six Finals appearances.
Curry averaged 31.2 points, six rebounds and five assists against the Celtics, including a 43-point explosion in Game 4 at TD Garden. He’s now just one of seven players in NBA history with at least two MVP awards and at least four championships.
“It means we won,” Curry said of his honor. “It means we took advantage of the opportunity to get back here . ... We hear all the chatter. At the end of the day, it’s about what we do on the floor. Ain’t gotta talk about it — you just gotta go do it — and that’s what this is about.”
Curry was quick to credit his teammates for the NBA title and his individual honor. “Everybody on this stage had a part of this, from the front office, coaches, players. At the beginning the year, what were they saying? We weren’t even on the radar, and now we’re here with two trophies. It means a lot.”
Curry won the inaugural Magic Johnson Western Conference finals MVP Award after averaging 23.8 points per game in the Warriors’ series victory over the Mavericks. He was also named to the All-NBA Second Team after averaging 25.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and 6.3 assists over 64 regularseason games.
In February, Curry won his first NBA All-Star Game MVP Award, teaming with LeBron James and scoring 50 points as Team LeBron defeated Team Durant 163-160.
