Dodgers’ Gonsolin first to reach 9 wins

Tony Gonsolin became the first pitcher in the majors to reach nine wins, Freddie Freeman drove in five runs and the Dodgers beat the Reds 8-2 in Cincinnati on Tuesday night.

Gonsolin (9-0), who pitched for St. Mary’s, gave up two runs and three hits through five innings and 87 pitches, relying mostly on a four-seam fastball and mixing in a splitter and slider. The 28-year-old righty has a 1.58 ERA.

Of the three hits Gonsolin surrendere­d, two were solo home runs, by Jonathan India leading off the Reds’ first and Albert Almora Jr. in the second.

Four Dodgers relievers threw scoreless innings to wrap up the win.

Meanwhile, Cincinnati starter Tyler Mahle (2-6) was lucky to give up only four runs through six innings. He allowed 12 hits but manage to strand eight runners.

Will Smith homered into the left-field seats in the first inning for the Dodgers, his ninth the season.

Freeman put the Dodgers ahead in the third after back-toback singles by Gavin Lux and Trea Turner, hitting a two-run double into the right-field corner.

Freeman delivered a basesloade­d triple off the center-field wall off in the eighth.

Turner had a season-high four hits and extended his hit streak to 13 games.

Rays 5, Yankees 4: Isaac Paredes homered in his first three at-bats and host Tampa Bay handed New York its third loss in 20 games. Paredes was hit by a pitch from Ron Marinaccio in the seventh. Tampa Bay acquired the 23-year-old from Detroit on April 4 for outfielder Austin Meadows.

Marlins 9, Rockies 8: Garrett Cooper hit a go-ahead double in the eighth inning, and Avisail Garcia homered and had three RBIs as host Miami won a seesaw game after trailing 4-0. Garcia’s three-run shot was part of a five-run fourth inning that put Miami ahead, and the Marlins went ahead 8-5 before Colorado tied it 8-8 in the sixth inning.

Pirates 7, Cubs 1: Bligh Madris hit his first major-league home run and fellow rookie Roansy Contreras pitched five solid innings as host Pittsburgh beat Chicago. Madris’ homer came a day after he had three hits in his big-league debut.

Nationals 3, Orioles 0: Erick Fedde allowed two hits over six innings, and visiting Washington beat Baltimore for its second straight victory following an eight-game skid. Fedde (5-5), who struck out four, walked one and did not allow a runner past first base.

Red Sox 5, Tigers 4: Trevor Story hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the fourth inning for host Boston. Javier Baez had three hits, including a triple and a home run, and Miguel Cabrera added three hits for Detroit. Briefly: Max Scherzer (left oblique strain) allowed two earned runs on two hits and recorded six strikeouts with one walk across 31⁄3 innings and 65 pitches in his first rehab start, pitching for Double-A Binghamton . ... Shortstop Wander Franco (quad strain) did well in the first two games of his minor-league rehab assignment and will join Triple-A Durham for three games in Jacksonvil­le; he could rejoin the Rays this weekend . ... The Dodgers added outfielder Trayce Thompson, brother of Warriors guard Klay, to the active roster after acquiring him from the Tigers for cash. Thompson returns to the Dodgers after spending parts of the 2016 and 2017 seasons with them. He hit .207 with 14 home runs and 34 RBIs in 107 games in that time . ... St. Louis first baseman Paul Goldschmid­t was out of the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Brewers because of what manager Oliver Marmol described as back tightness . ... Major League Baseball is standardiz­ing procedures for rubbing baseballs and their removal from humidors in an effort to establish more consistenc­y amid complaints about slickness that followed the crackdown on sticky substances.
