3 more U.S. golds at swimming worlds
Hungary’s Kristof Milak thrilled home fans in Budapest by lowering his world record in the men’s 200 butterfly at the swimming world championships, in which Americans claimed three more gold medals.
Milak, 22, clocked 1 minute, 50.34 seconds and earn Hungary its first gold medal of the event.
Bobby Finke set a U.S. record of 7:39.36 after a sizzling finish to win the first gold of the evening in the men’s 800 freestyle.
Ukrainian Mykhailo Romanchuk, whose father is fighting against Russia in the Ukraine, looked headed for victory but Finke, who was fourth going into the last 50 meters, swam it in only 25.93 seconds to overtake both Romanchuk and Germany’s Florian Wellbrock for the victory.
The other two other American victories involved Nic Fink, who won the men’s 50 breaststroke in an American record of 26.45 seconds, and claimed his second gold of the night by helping teammates Hunter Armstrong, Torri Huske and Claire Curzan to victory in the mixed 4x100 medley relay.
Griner update: A phone call between WNBA center Brittney Griner, jailed in Moscow on a drug charge, and her wife, Cherelle, has been rescheduled after an earlier attempt to connect on the couple’s anniversary failed because of an “unfortunate mistake,” Biden administration officials said. The State Department and White House did not offer a date for the rescheduled call.
WNBA: Maya Caldwell scored 18 points, Rhyne Howard added 16 points and eight boards, and the host Atlanta Dream beat Dallas 80-75 to snap a four-game skid. Atlanta (8-8) equaled its win total from last season. Obituary: Former Purdue basketball center Caleb Swanigan, who was a first-round NBA draft pick who played for the Portland Trail Blazers and Sacramento Kings, died at 25 of natural causes at Lutheran Hospital in his hometown of Fort Wayne, Ind.
