Harper’s surgery deemed success
Philadelphia outfielder Bryce Harper had successful surgery to repair his broken left thumb Wednesday, interim manager Rob Thomson said, but there is no timetable for Harper’s return.
The Phillies remain hopeful the 2021 NL MVP can play again this season.
“It went very well,” Thomson said of Harper’s operation.
Thomson deferred all other questions about the surgery to Harper, who is expected to return to Philadelphia this week to address the situation.
Harper was injured Saturday when he was clipped by a fastball from San Diego left-hander Blake Snell.
Harper is batting .318 with 15 homers and 48 RBIs.
Mets’ updates: Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom, who is recovering from a stress reaction on his right scapula that was diagnosed during spring training, threw 27 pitches during a batting-practice session and is moving closer to a rehab assignment, manager Buck Showalter said.
DeGrom, a two-time Cy Young Award winner whose 2021 season ended in July because of a forearm strain, threw batting practice for the third time in eight days.
After watching deGrom’s latest session in Port St. Lucie, Fla., via a video hookup, Showalter said he liked what he saw.
“You can tell he’s upbeat about where he is,” Showalter said.
