In a miraculous rescue, a dog was saved after being trapped under large rocks at Ocean Beach, according to an Instagram post from San Francisco Animal Care and Control.

The dog, a 1-year-old springer spaniel named Gwen, was buried under the rocks near the sewage treatment plant, the post said. It was low tide, but the water was approaching the area where the dog was trapped.

A jogger, identified as Brian Glover by Runner’s World, was passing by, heard a bark and decided to look around. “Not only did it sound like the dog was in trouble, but it was also muffled, as if it was stuck inside something,” Glover told Runner’s World.

The incident occurred Jan. 16, but it came to broader attention late last week via articles from publications including People and Runner’s World.

Glover, 61, was 20 minutes into his route along the beach when he heard the bark, he told the magazine. “I turned around immediately to make sure I wasn’t about to get jumped by a dog,” Glover told Runner’s World . However, nothing was behind him — and though he continued running for a bit, he eventually doubled back, still thinking about how strange the bark had sounded.

Eventually he searched between stones on the beach and “miraculously spotted a dog’s face looking up from the rocks,” according to the Instagram post. Officer Carlos Ortega from San Francisco Animal Care and Control was able to locate Gwen and dislodge the large rocks so that she could be free.

According to the post, animal control was unsure how Gwen had become trapped beneath the rocks. Officials said it was possible she dislodged a large rock and fell under it while it rolled on top, preventing her from getting out.

Officials said Gwen was reunited with her family in Noe Valley, which had reported her missing, and was all right besides being frightened and cold.
