Two Oakland men, teen accused of 48 car break-ins in Millbrae

- By Sarah Ravani

Two men and a teenager were arrested Saturday morning in Millbrae on suspicion of breaking into 48 cars in the city, authorities said.

Deputies received an alert through a license plate reader that a stolen Hyundai was driving eastbound near the intersection of Millbrae Avenue and Highway 101, the San Mateo County Sheriff ’s Office said.

As deputies searched for the vehicle, they drove through the parking lot of the Westin Hotel and heard a car alarm go off. Someone had broken into a car and smashed the window. It’s unclear whether that break-in is related to the drivers of the stolen Hyundai.

Throughout the day, the Sheriff’s Office received reports of about 48 other cars being burglarized throughout the city.

Later that day, a witness called 911 and said a red Hyundai crashed into a home near the intersection of Helen and Tioga drives. The witness reported that three people ran from the vehicle, jumped fences and entered the Green Hills Country Club.

Deputies worked with the San Bruno Police Department to surround the area and take the three into custody.

The suspects were identified as Amir Burke, 20, Maurice Grace, 18, and a 13-year-old boy whose name is being withheld. All three are Oakland residents.

Burke and Grace were booked at the San Mateo County Jail on six charges, including felony burglary and driving a stolen vehicle. The boy was booked into the San Mateo County Youth Services Center on five charges, including felony burglary and driving a stolen vehicle.

“We take the safety and security of our community very seriously,” Sheriff Christina Corpus said.
